Lilly Parks ends her high school swimming career in the record books.
Lilly Parks, a Sierra Canyon senior, Friday became the first female swimmer in the Southern Section Div. IV to win the 100-yard breaststroke four years in a row by clocking 1 minute, 5.57 seconds at Riverside City College. "It's a bittersweet feeling. I'm walking out of here as the champion and record holder, but at the same time, I'm sad that it's over," Parks told the Daily News. "I'm just really happy and thankful that I had this spectacular opportunity over the last four years. When I look in the record book, I'm in there along with so many amazing people. I'm always going to be able to look back and have those memories and just remember how much fun I had." Read more about the swim meet and Lilly Parks here and here. Follow us on …

Dog rescues in our neighborhood highlight common mistakes made by recent owners.
Three of my neighbors have adopted dogs recently, and I've noticed they could use some guidance on how to handle their new pets. First, rescuing is an important act of social heroism! The world is better, and pain is lessened when you offer a pet your home and family. If you adopt or rescue an animal—a bunny, cat, or dog—you have done a great thing, provided you have thought through pet ownership and looked at this as a process with a long-term goal. On the other hand, after a few weeks or months, it may be time to find out how to stop making some of these common mistakes. A close friend invited me to join her dog walk. (She asked to remain anonymous —as did my other examples.) On our way out of her house, the dog led the way. 1. Don't let…

Prep school begins to build a powerhouse swimming program.
Chatsworth's Sierra Canyon School has hired former Olympic great Matt Biondi to coach swimming and teach math, reports Dave Krider at MaxPreps.com. Biondi, 46, is the former principal at Stephens Middle School in Salem, Ore. He and his wife, Kirsten, currently live in Hawaii with their three children. Biondi's trophy collection includes 11 Olympic medals, including five golds from the 1988 Seoul Olympics. "We built a middle school program three years ago and our long-term goal is hopefully to build our own pool," Sierra Canyon athletic director Rock Pillsbury said. Former Major League Baseball player Lenny Dykstra was sentenced today to three years in prison for leasing high-end automobiles from an area dealership by providing false information and claiming credit through a phony business. Dykstra, 49, pleaded no contest in October to three counts of grand theft auto and one count of filing a false financial statement. The one-time slugger for the Philadelphia Phillies and New York Mets had asked to withdraw his plea, saying he now wanted to fight the charges, but San Fernando Superior Court Judge Cynthia Ulfig rejected the request. ``The thing I am stumped by is he keeps saying, `I am not a criminal,' but he clearly engaged in criminal conduct,'' Ulfig said. Dykstra's attorney, Andrew Flier, said …

Getting cut from Chatsworth High's basketball team hasn't prevented him from playing NCAA Basketball.
Coming From Nowhere. Here's a nice surprise of a sports story, about Chatsworth High School graduate DeShawn Stephens. from Mark Ziegler of the San Diego Union-Tribune. Ryan Rubino is a 6-foot-2 junior guard at San Diego Christian College. He had a nice career at Chatsworth High, then played a couple seasons at Los Angeles Pierce Community College before transferring. In January, San Diego Christian played San Diego State at Viejas Arena. The starting lineups were introduced, and 6-8 Aztecs junior forward DeShawn Stephens walked on the floor for the opening tip. And the thought must have crossed Rubino’s mind: What are you doing here? Stephens also attended San Fernando Valley’s Chatsworth High at the same time. He, too, was a senior …

A Studio City father of three says he is seeking to make the biggest purchase of a sports franchise in history. He’s facing ‘Rocky’ odds, even with an estimated $2.2 billion bid.
Josh Macciello says he always had big dreams. At the moment, his dreams are the same as those of Magic Johnson, Joe Torre, Mark Cuban, Larry King and guys like that. He wants to buy the Dodgers. What makes Macciello’s dream even more amazing is that he’s an admitted underdog in this fierce bidding war, and if he were to succeed, he would—at 36—be the youngest sports franchise owner in history after making the biggest purchase of a sports team in history. Sources close to the deal confirm that the bid he laid out recently is about $2.2 billion for the Dodgers and the stadium. Macciello would only confirm that, “with the money I’m bidding, I could buy three sport teams.” _________________________________________ Editor's Note 3/15/2012: An …
