Despite Cutbacks, $350K Face-Lift Begins at CSUN Chief’s Home, Office

Student newspaper reveals plans for new university president.

After tuition hikes, hunger-strikes, closed-out classes and enrollment caps, Cal State Northridge faces yet another money issue. Office renovations for incoming President Diane Harrison are costing $243,292 in state funding and renovations to her university house will cost around $115,000, according to the student-run Daily Sundial newspaper. “This is a time of tight budgets. This is a time of cutbacks. This is a time of faculty furloughs. This is a time of students being locked out of classes. It just sends the wrong message,” 20-year CSUN faculty member, Professor Nate Thomas told KCAL9. But interim CSUN President Harry Hellenbrand says his hands are tied. CSU regulations prohibit him from shifting money from one budget to another and …

Outrageous. I find it hard to believe the budget has a line item in it for renovations to the President's office and house. The cost of these renovations is outrageous as well. What the heck are the doing to her office? Adding a sun porch? Building a Starbucks coffee bar? If it was good enough for Koester, it should be good enough for her. At least until the University gets its funding back. They…   more ›

A New Wave of Charter Schools: What Does it Mean?

Tamar Galatzan of School Board, District 3, writes about charter affiliate schools.

Several years ago, when the state budget crisis began, we saw the first of the Valley Schools applying to become affiliated charters. Yesterday, at the Charter meeting, a whopping 24 schools had public hearings to become affiliated charter schools—nearly all of them from my own Board District 3 and the San Fernando Valley. They represent some of the highest performing schools in my district, and some of the last schools with a significant middle class population in the city. They represent a tidal wave of change, and I wonder what it means for the Los Angeles Unified School District and for public education. Is this the birth of a new system? Will traditional public schools become a repository for the poor and the special education …

Hunger Strike Ends at Cal State Northridge

Students failed to get the university to freeze tuition.

The hunger strike at Cal State Northridge is over. A dozen students at six California State University campuses failed to get the university to freeze tuition, safeguard current classes and cut administrator pay and perks. But they did get the CSU trustees to consider a single demand: establishment of free speech areas on each campus. You'll find the full story here.

Northridge Academy High School Listed Among Best by U.S. News & World Report

The school is ranked 736th in the country.

Northridge Academy High School has made the U.S. News & World Report list of top high schools in the nation. The school is listed at 736th in the list, which also notes that it is above the national average in terms of the "college readiness" of its students. That figure is based on the number of students passing their AP examinations. Schools in the list are measured against a number of other factors, including reading and math test score results and the performance of the school's least-advantaged students. Northridge Academy High School at 9601 Zelza Ave. is one of 50 LAUSD schools that made the list. Nearby Granada Hills Charter High ranked 726. Chatsworth High School did not place in the rankings. Trustees Would Freeze Salary of CSUN President

Private foundations could be permitted to raise funds on their own to increase the compensation by up to 10 percent.

The salary of new Cal State Northridge President Dianne F. Harrison would be frozen at the level of her predecessor under a policy approved by a CSU Board of Trustees committee Tuesday, but private foundations would be permitted to raise funds on their own to increase the compensation by up to 10 percent. The full board will consider the proposal, which would impact all 23 CSU presidents, Wednesday. The proposal was approved unanimously by the board's Special Committee on Presidential Selection and Compensation Policy, despite protests being staged outside the meeting by students, teachers and others who said all money - - even private dollars -- should be used to reduce tuition or increase teacher salaries, not paying executives. During …
