The problem is that just like hospitals people use these services for non emergencies. They useRead More emergency rooms for colds and such, because they know that they can't be denied for any reason. For example no health insurance or a drug addict. I don't know the solution, but something has to be done. I remember one time I was so sick and the wait time at Kaiser ER was 7 hours so I thought the next time I got that sick I would call an ambulance and I wouldn't have to wait. Well I had a minor heart attack and guess what I still waited. There are just too many people here that don't belong and they need to leave or start paying taxes so we can build more hospitals. Quite a few level 1 trauma centers went bankrupt because of all the uninsured illegals.
karen April 24, 2014 at 01:04 pm
It's called "Obama Care". The ER is getting over crowded due to non emergency usage ofRead More "Coughs and colds." The number of lic. inpatient beds have been reduced through the government. A lot of MD's are not providers on the "Obamacare" and also many MD's are not taking any new "Medicare patients" due to the low reimbursement rate on medicace policies.

Another cause may be distracted drivers. How about that 16 speaker Bang and Olufson 500-1000 wattRead More system in Audi's (true) ? Blue tooth phone confab with all the kids at home on speaker phone ? Talking to siri ? Sorry but that Navigation crap while supposed to help drivers causes them to wander all over the place too. You can't look down at a screen and see something jump out in front of your car either. People think driving is like a movie (cartoon ?), they are comfy and doing their thing until the forces of physics, 2 4,000 pound vehicles hitting each other at 50 miles per hour arrive. The comfy living room becomes an egg dropped from a rooftop. it is probably only because the car was disabled that the driver stuck around too, why stay and get in trouble when you can hit and run ? We are in a time when everyone is a 12 year old. Do you stop at stop signs when no one is around ..or go through because you won't get caught ? Same thing with crossing double yellow ? How about going through stops and crossing double yellows on the phone ?
Charles Murray April 21, 2014 at 09:35 am
There's no doubt that all those distractions Jock mentioned, are menaces on the road. But IRead More maintain, that regardless of car audio power or screaming kids or what may be, a good mechanical siren will overpower all of those things. For those who don't know what I'm talking about, here's a brief explanation of how a siren works, and why some can be heard and others not: On a mechanical siren (as on most fire engines), there is a heavy electric motor which turns a special blower fan called a chopper, which causes air to be sucked in and then momentarily compressed, then released at a high-frequency pulse. Those sound waves are much stronger, and will penetrate the best-insulated cars, and will bounce around buildings and trees, etc. Thus it is far more likely that a blind-approaching emergency vehicle will be heard loud & clear in good time. These mechanical sirens are heavy, and perhaps a little more costly than electronic sirens. Electronic sirens, such as those in LAPD, LASD, and most other police agencies in CA, are simply a tone generator (like a cellphone ringer), which is put into a loud PA amplifier and then into a horn speaker. These sound waves are very loud, but they do not bend or conform to corners, nor to they penetrate a well-insulated luxury car so well. Yes it might be costly to retrofit LAPD cars with mechanical sirens, but what is a few hundred dollars per car, as compared to a few wrongful death suits?
Jock April 21, 2014 at 09:55 am
Of course you're right totally Charles, the sound must penetrate these layers. A real siren willRead More cause you to hold your ears as they go by and you can still feel the sound waves

@mailyn, thanks! I appreciate the info. What do you know of or think about yahoo messengerRead More app....pretty safe to use??
Marilyn Halpin April 23, 2014 at 10:35 am
Hey M, sorry for the late response. Since Apple's iPad is a closed system and you can only load appsRead More from their store, pretty much all of them have been vetted to be not harmful. The biggest issue we see on the iPads are people forgetting to restart them every once in awhile :-) We have free group classes at mac-fusion if you ever wanted to learn more about your iPad! http://mac-fusion.com/classes

What a joke they're making of this. The reason for this crash is California's criminal negligence.Read More Obviously the "distance" between opposing traffic traveling at 80 MPH doesn't matter. A "K" rail between the two vehicles would have PREVENTED this crash, undoubtedly. But Ca. would rather pay their public criminals outrages salaries, than invest a little of that money on HIGHWAY SAFETY. I hope all the families of the crash victims know that they need to SUE THE HELL OUT OF the state of California .
Stoked April 14, 2014 at 09:00 am
It's all about $$$$$. No K rails or bigger trucks. If you think that double trailers are scary youRead More might want to steer clear of Oregon mountain highways where FedEx tows triples.

I think the texting, messaging may be a big part of this accident. Please don't drive and use aRead More electronic device. Profesional or a 17 year old girl driving dads truck. Its very scary. Jaques,( jock ) trucks have been clean for some time now. My 1996 does not smoke, maybe a puff aRead More start up- and it has a million miles on the original engine. My problem with the damn CARB NAZIS is that they reneged on the agreement they had with the EPA and now say "well, so sorry Danny. Yeah, umm, we did say your truck was clean enough back in 1996, but now because we have enough whack-job treehuggers backing us, we can do whatever the hell we want". FINE but Commufornia, get ready to pay A LOT MORE for EVERYTHING you buy. I'm already enjoying the higher rates I can charge to brings cars into this backwards state. I continue to run my old truck and Laugh my way to the bank HAHAHAHA!!!!
Jock April 20, 2014 at 10:01 am
Danny. I'm sure Your truck runs clean. Tell me you haven't seen rigs that look like an 1870Read More locomotive running down the road. Don't get all literal, you know what I mean. If you grew up sucking the smog of the 50's here you would have a different opinion perhaps. By the way, they still haven't announced what caused this crash. Believe it, they will sue the $$$$$$ out of those who are causing fires, the trucking industry must go on efficiently and safely it is in every ones interest.

just praying. My children all attend Chatsworth so waiting to hear news that may affect themRead More personally is hard. Either way, praying for these families- especially if they are low income- can you imagine having to come up with money to bury your child if you qualify for this program? Chances are you cannot afford it. I hope the communities step up.

I know. This is one of those stories that just hits you in the gut as a parent. Even if your kidRead More isn't directly involved, we all have an indirect connection (mine is that my son's a senior at HSU and I HATE that 12-hour commute he has to make). Heart-breaking.

..."one of two students at Banning High School in Wilmington who was sitting in the back rowRead More told NBC4 the impact was sudden, extremely painful and immediately ignited a fire." This is horrific... but, the first thing that came to my mind - I'm sure SEAT BELTS were nowhere to be seen. Just a metal tomb where bodies get tossed around like packages. WHY does “Click It or Ticket” not apply to buses. School buses in particular - although Metro buses ought to require them also. Is it that seat belts cost too much money? How much is a life worth? The medical bills incurred in this crash could probably install seat belts in 1000 buses. The minimum ticket cost of an adult seat belt violation in California is $142 and up, and a minimum of $445 for not properly restraining a child under 16. If the parent is not in the car, the driver gets the ticket. Who gets this ticket?

Since none of you above are lawyers nor have you read the complete complaint, how do you know thisRead More is just a money grab or unfounded? I was let go from a job once and my boss, during the exit interview mentioned by spiritual practice and that she really respected me professionally but not personally. I *could* have sued because it was clear to me..after months of chatter...that I was being let go partially in part because of my spiritual practice(not Christian) and partially because they had to cut a staff person to save money. Why not cut the "heathen"
lorrie mcvicker April 9, 2014 at 12:20 pm
don't forget there are two sides to every story. Both probably have good reasons.
Mary A April 9, 2014 at 10:06 pm
Sorry, I'm a Christian, but I side with the Wiccans based on the information in this article. No oneRead More should be forced to be involved in religious ceremony as part of required workplace training, or retaliated against because they voiced their opposition. I have a lot of respect for the LAPD and for all people and places of worship that do good works. But on this one the LAPD blew it.

Terrible tragedy. Without more facts about the incident itself, it is unclear what may be the causeRead More of the incident. Oftentimes, pedestrians and motorists misjudge the distance between themselves and passing trains and miscalculate the speed of the oncoming train. In other instances some or all of the legal fault lies with the train operator for traveling at an unauthorized speed, failing to signal or sound their horn, or any of a number of other rule or regulation violations. Our condolences go out this the family of the deceased pedestrian!

It's not necessarily victimless. Here's one case we're following in OC. Very hypocritical, considering Paul Krekorian used city funds a few years ago to develop a cellRead More phone app to tell you whether parking is available in city parking structures without pulling into it first. You have to break the law in order to use it. HILARIOUS!! Now the city can make money from tickets the write for using an illegal app they developed.
