On Sunday, California will experience a rare solar eclipse for the first time in 18 years.
Supermoon is SO yesterday. We are in for another extraterrestrial event this weekend: a rare "ring of fire" solar eclipse that hasn't been seen in the United States since 1994, reports the Huffington Post. Called an annular solar eclipse, the moon and sun will align exactly on Sunday, May 20, creating a "ring of fire" around the moon because of the sun's larger apparent size, said the website. Although the best views of the full "ring of fire" eclipse will be from Northern California, those of us here in Chatsworth, Northridge and Porter Ranch will still be able to view a celestial display. The Griffith Observatory notes for LA, the moon will eclipse 86 percent of the sun's diameter, which will be the most "extensive" eclipse the city has …

New FIRESTAT-LA data system urged to track fire department response time.
COUNCILMEMBER ENGLANDER'S E-NEWS May 18, 2012 Support for Our FIRESTAT-LA Proposal in Response to Problems with Fire Department Response Times... As Chairman of the Public Safety Committee, I have been highly concerned about the recent news that the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) reported faster response times than it actually was achieving. The response times are the most crucial measure of the City's ability to ensure public safety. A statistics specialist appointed by the Mayor released a report about the LAFD response times on Monday, May 14 that supports my proposal to create FIRESTAT-LA, a system for the Fire Department based on the LAPD's highly successful COMPSTAT system. The report calls for LAFD to end the use of its flawed …
The time it takes 911 operators to dispatch firefighters has been getting substantially slower, too.
An audit by City Controller Wendy Greuel released Friday found that Los Angeles firefighters responded to emergency medical calls an average of 12 seconds slower since Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and the City Council cut the fire department's staff size in 2009. The San Fernando Valley saw an even higher increase of 20 seconds. The audit also found major underlying problems with the quality of the data. Greuel's audit also comes the same day the City Council begins discussing the city budget, which includes money for a study of how best to fix the department's broken response-time data system. Analyses of response times is "the most important tool we have to show success or failures," said Councilman Mitch Englander, who chairs the Public …
A trial date has yet to be set for Dorothee Burkhart who is wanted on a host of fraud charges in Germany.
A federal judge heard arguments Thursday but made no decision on whether to order the extradition of the mother of a man suspected of setting dozens of fires in Hollywood, West Hollywood and the San Fernando Valley over New Year's weekend. Dorothee Burkhart, 53, is fighting extradition to her native Germany, where she is wanted on a host of fraud charges. Contrary to her behavior at previous hearings, the woman sat quietly, taking notes. Michael Belter, Burkhart's attorney, argued against extradition on several fronts. First, the woman has been subpoenaed by her son's defense as a key witness in the arson case, the attorney said, adding that he had questions about the statute of limitations on the German fraud charges. He also said his …

Student newspaper reveals plans for new university president.
After tuition hikes, hunger-strikes, closed-out classes and enrollment caps, Cal State Northridge faces yet another money issue. Office renovations for incoming President Diane Harrison are costing $243,292 in state funding and renovations to her university house will cost around $115,000, according to the student-run Daily Sundial newspaper. “This is a time of tight budgets. This is a time of cutbacks. This is a time of faculty furloughs. This is a time of students being locked out of classes. It just sends the wrong message,” 20-year CSUN faculty member, Professor Nate Thomas told KCAL9. But interim CSUN President Harry Hellenbrand says his hands are tied. CSU regulations prohibit him from shifting money from one budget to another and …

Chatsworth warehouse will sell donated building supplies, furniture, TVs and appliances.
Habitat for Humanity Thursday won the support of the Land Use Committee of the Chatsworth Neighborhood Council to open a store on De Soto Avenue. Tom Stemnock, of the local Habitat board of directors, was requesting a zoning variance to allow the sale of donated appliances, TVs, sinks, toilets and furniture at the new Habitat ReStore at 9610 De Soto Ave. Zoning currently permits sale of lumber, wallboard, paint and other building materials. Habitat often receives surplus hot tubs and big-screen television prizes for resale from TV game shows such as "The Price Is Right," he said. Habitat for Humanity builds houses for low-income working families. They have built more than 200 homes in Southern California. Stemnock said it costs Habitat $…

Outrageous. I find it hard to believe the budget has a line item in it for renovations to the President's office and house. The cost of these renovations is outrageous as well. What the heck are the doing to her office? Adding a sun porch? Building a Starbucks coffee bar? If it was good enough for Koester, it should be good enough for her. At least until the University gets its funding back. They…   more ›
