Big Sunday Weekend Events in the West Valley

Friday and Sunday will feature three area volunteer activities focused on community service.

This upcoming weekend represents the 2012 version of the Big Sunday Weekend, in which tens of thousands of Californians set out to perform community service in cities across the state.

Three Big Sunday Weekend events will take place in and around the West Valley:

Give back at LA Animal Alliance (West Valley)

  • Date: 05/04/2012
  • Start Time: 10:00 AM
  • End Time: 02:00 PM
  • Age Group: All Ages
  • Location: Chatsworth
  • Volunteers Still Needed: 40
  • Description: Our local animal shelters have wonderful cats and dogs that need some fun and attention. Cats need play and TLC to stay healthy at the shelter, so we will make toys to keep them engaged and their spirits high. And, apparently, dogs wearing bandanas have a higher rate of adoption, so we will make bandanas, too. Volunteers can also make new signs and description cards telling people all about the dogs at the shelter. We’ll also help the shelter promote Super Senior May, a month long event promoting adoption discounts for older animals.

Pick Fruit in Northridge for Food Pantries with Food Forward

  • Date: 05/06/2012
  • Start Time: 09:30 AM
  • End Time: 12:00 PM
  • Age Group: 12+
  • Location: Northridge
  • Volunteers Still Needed: 0
  • Description: Food Forward helps to feed thousands of hungry people each year by gleaning peoples' excess fruits and vegetables and donating the harvest to Los Angeles area food pantries. Volunteers will pick fruits and vegetables from throughout Northridge (your project captain will let you know the exact address). Don’t forget to wear sturdy shoes and sun block, and bring gardening gloves and pruning shears if you have them.

Help Garden at Hamlin Street Elementary School

  • Date: 05/06/2012
  • Start Time: 09:00 AM
  • End Time: 01:00 PM
  • Age Group: All Ages
  • Location: West Hills
  • Volunteers Still Needed: 32
  • Description: Welcome Hamlin Street Elementary to Big Sunday! Volunteers are needed to help add more gardening space in the existing garden and creating a huge mural with a farmscape that will face the edible school garden. Hamlin's hope is to paint and mural as many locations as possible. Hope you can join them!

As you can see, volunteers are still needed for two of these events. If you would like to volunteer, simply click the event links above and sign up.
