What Were the School Calendar-Makers Thinking?

Reader 'can't help but feel that bureaucrats over the hill are again ignoring the plight of valley residents.'

Editor,

The LAUSD generated a press release dated 8/6/12 touting it's as a benefit so that children may complete their first semester prior to winter break and families can enjoy summer earlier with their children when school ends May 31, 2013.

As considerate as this sounds, with triple-digit weather forecasted again this week, I can't help but feel that bureaucrats over the hill are again ignoring the plight of valley residents.

I am very worried about sending my little ones to old LAUSD campuses mostly cooled by swamp coolers where the children go out for recess and lunch on sweltering blacktops that suffer from little to no shade. And this brilliant plan costs $2 mil - $3 mil (reportedly) to implement. Where do they get there money and frankly, these irresponsible (and downright dangerous) ideas?

I don't need for my kids to be home early from school during our famous June gloom weather, I don't care that they will be done with the semester before winter break -- but I do care that I don't have a plan to keep them cool when it's 105 degrees at school -- I mean sunblock can only go so far and how many cold water bottles can you pack in a 4-year-old's backpack???
