Chatsworth's Lomas Comes Up Short at Golf Championships

The junior fails to advance after shooting an 85 at Murrieta, but she performed better than she thought she would.

MURRIETA - Coming in with modest expectations, Chatsworth High junior Madison Lomas walked away a happy golfer Wednesday at the CIF-WSCGA Southern California Championships at The Golf Club in Murrieta.

Lomas shot an 85, placing just above what she hoped.

"When I came here, I just wanted to shoot an 88 or 90 or something, and I was able to break that," she said. "I just tried not to be overwhelmed because I knew how big this was going to be.

"I just wanted to stay calm and have a good time. I knew I wasn't going to get into the top six, so I just wanted to have fun."

Like many golfers on Wednesday, Lomas had a difficult time putting on the hilly course.

"The greens are like cement. It was unbelievable," she said. "But I practiced putting in the morning and got a little used to it."

Lomas' coach Liz Lara spoke highly of Lomas, who figures to make a return trip to the championships in 2011.

"Madison is very mature for her age," she said. "She comes back from a tough shot and rebounds. She does very well under pressure."

Torrance High School continued its dominance at the championships, defending its team title by edging Torrey Pines by two strokes, 372-374. It was the Tartars' fifth championship in the last six years.

Palm Desert High School finished third (378 team score) and will join Torrance and Torrey Pines in next week's CIF State Championships.

Irvine Beckman's Kaitlin Park won the individual title, shooting a 6-under par 66. Park was followed by Steele Canyon's Marissa Borja and Westlake's Lauren Diaz-Yi, who each shot 68.

The CIF State Meet is Tuesday at the Red Hill Country Club in Rancho Cucamonga.
