Sierra Canyon's Football Team at Full Strength With Young, Prince

The Trailblazers figure to be stronger than ever now that injured linebacker William Young has rejoined and touted transfer Reggie Prince has gained eligibility.

  • Final Score: Sierra Canyon 55, Tri-Cities 13

If you thought high-powered Sierra Canyon, No. 1 in the East Valley Division football rankings, was good before, just wait until you see them now.

The Trailblazers (3-0), winning by an average of more than 43 points heading into a nonleague game at 2 p.m. Saturday against Tri-Cities Christian at Army-Navy High in San Diego, have been fortified by the addition of leading tackler William Young and promising receiever/defensive back Reggie Prince.

Young came back from an injury to rejoin the team last week in a 58-13 win over Village Christian and Prince has gained eligibility after transferring from Montclair Prep via San Fernando.

Young, a linebacker, had 12 tackles in the win over Village Christian, an opponent that was expected to put up more resistance after reaching the Mid-Valley semifinals last year.

“William Young is the heart and soul of our team. Him being on the field makes our defense much stronger,” Sierra Canyon coach Jon Ellinghouse said. “He had a phenomenal game against Village Chrisitan.”

Prince, a 6-4, 190-pounder, had two interceptions for San Fernando two years ago as a sophomore. He will start immediately, Ellinghouse said.

“He’s a very talented athlete, and he has taken the time to adjust to our system,” Ellinghouse said. “We’re looking forward to having him, a big, physical receiver and a great defensive back, as well. He is going to be a great addition to our team.”

In the win over Village Christian, Sierra Canyon amassed 437 yards, as Tyler Stewart passed for 236 yards and three touchdowns, Xavier Menifield rushed for 120 yards and two touchdowns, and Julian Brooks had five receptions for 113 yards and two touchdowns.

Brooks was not expected to play because of a knee injury, but he was cleared late Thursday when an MRI proved negative.

Sierra Canyon is 15-2 since being promoted from eight-man football, and the Trailblazers are 41-point favorite Saturday on Calpreps.com, though Ellinghouse plans to take Tri-Cities seriously.

“They’re a really good defensive team, very physical, and the play good pass coverage,” Ellinghouse said. “It should be a good challenge for us. All I care about is playing our best game, and we have not done that yet. I’m not focused on the score.”

CHATSWORTH RIDING FOOTBALL MOMENTUM

  • Final Score: Chatsworth 42, Monroe 20

Chatsworth (2-0), coming off a 28-12 win over respectable Arleta, is off to a good football start, and the Chancellors continue tonight at 7 at Monroe (1-2) in North Hills.

“Beating Arleta was a great win for our program because they are a well established team that will not miss a step this year,” Chatsworth coach Andrew Kim said. “Arleta really tested our ability to stop a team with an outstanding run game. We did good job stopping them in the red zone, but we made a lot of mistakes that need to be corrected.”

Cory Francies completed 12 of 17 for 182 yards and a touchdown in the win over Arleta, and Anthony Urquidi had five receptions for 84 yards.

“Cory was very accurate and managed the offense well,” Kim said. “He made good reads and identified coverages well. He had a great run for a touchdown, and he had a pass for a touchdown.”
