Granada Hills High Students in Sacramento for Academic Decathlon

16 other Southland high schools are also in the state competition.

Teams of students from Granada Hills Charter High and 16 other Southland high schools are in Sacramento to compete in the annual California Academic Decathlon in hopes of winning a trip to the national competition.

Two-time defending national champion Granada Hills, won the Los Angeles Unified School District Academic Decathlon for the third consecutive year with 56,804.7 points out of a possible 65,400.

Nine other LAUSD teams qualified as wild card entrants for the state competition, which will wrap up with an awards ceremony Sunday: Marshall (56,445.4); Franklin (55,913.6); El Camino Real (55,421.3); Bell (47,871.2); Garfield (43,768.9); Hamilton (43,096.7); Narbonne (42,799.6); Francis Polytechnic (42,355.7); and North Hollywood (42,073.5).

Beverly Hills High School, which won the Los Angeles County Academic Decathlon by scoring 53,990.3 points, will lead the county delegation to the competition. Other county high schools competing are West (45,771.4); Burbank (45,635); Mark Keppel (44,327); El Rancho (43,332.5); Redondo Union (43,053.8); and South (41,654.7).

The theme of this year's competition is Russia.

The national competition will be held April 25-27 in Minneapolis.
