Smart Meter Rollout Underway in Chatsworth

About 9,100 Chatsworth homes are being equipped with new smart meters, courtesy of the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, aimed at improving energy management.

Along with neighborhoods near USC and UCLA, Chatsworth is a pilot community for the new meters, which allows LADWP to better monitor energy activity and note irregularities while granting homeowners easier access to stats regarding their electricity usage.

"Chatsworth was selected because LADWP had previously installed smart grid technology at our substations in this community," said public relations specialist Carol Tucker. "This makes it a cost-efficient location for testing smart meters, since the equipment that supports the smart meters within the power grid is already in place."

The meter rollout is expected to last through early November, Tucker said.

She said LADWP has been in touch with homes selected for the project, but those who want to decline the free installation can call 1-800-342-5397 or e-mail SmartGridLA@ladwp.com.
