More Details Sought on LAPD Impound Policy

Councilman Englander wants to know the entire scope of the plan.

Councilman Mitch Englander isn't sure what position to take on the LAPD's controversial decision to stop impounding the cars of most unlicensed drivers, says Rick Orlov in a report published on dailybreeze.com.

Englander, who represents Chatsworth, chairs the city's Public Safety Committee, and is a reserve police officer, disagreed with portions of the new policy but wanted to get more information.

"Police Chief Charlie Beck has announced plans starting this month to stop seizing vehicles of unlicensed drivers who are stopped at DUI checkpoints, unless their licenses have been suspended or revoked. A majority of those unlicensed drivers are believed to be illegal immigrants who do not qualify for a California driver's license."

"I appreciate you are trying to make a strong effort to deal with the different communities in the city," Englander said. "But we need to figure out the totality of the policy."
