Draft Impact Plan Released for Santa Susana Field Lab Cleanup

A detailed report outlining a proposed plan to remediate contaminated soil and groundwater at Santa Susana Field Laboratory, the site of a 1959 partial nuclear meltdown, has been released by NASA and is open to public comment.

The draft environmental impact statement says the chief option being considered for treatable soil is to expose it a number of chemical processes, while untreatable soil would be trucked away and dumped off-site.

Various "pump and treat," "vacuum extractions" and "heat-driven extraction" methods are suggested for treated groundwater, but an earlier Patch story states it could take decades or even centuries longer to fully remediate liquid.

The Santa Susana Field Laboratory is located in the Simi Hills west of Chatsworth. NASA and Boeing are primary operators of the site.

Two public meetings will be held to receive comments on the DEIS, on August 27, 2013, from 2-4 p.m., and on Aug. 28 from 6-8 p.m. Both meetings are being held at Corporate Pointe in the Auditorium at 8413 Fallbrook Avenue, West Hills, 91304.
