Councilman Wants List of Apartments Vulnerable to Earthquakes

An LA City Councilman is calling for compiling an inventory of apartment buildings that could be susceptible to collapse during a major tremor like the 1994 Northridge earthquake, the LA Times reports.

Councilman Tom LaBonge recently made the motion just a few weeks after San Francisco identified more than 3,000 complexes in need of retrofitting and strengthening, a project that could cost property owners between $60,000 and $130,000 per structure.

The 6.7-magnitude quake that struck nearly 20 years ago brought down more than 200 buildings, including the collapse of Northridge Meadows that claimed 16 lives.

According to the Times, the proposed list would include apartment buildings built before 1978 and stand at least two stories tall with five units.
