Have Opinions on Opening Chatsworth Park South? Get a Survey Here

The recreation area has been fenced since 2008 because of toxic contamination.

Residents living around Chatsworth Park South, which has been closed since Valentine's Day 2008 because of suspected lead contamination, have been receiving an opinion survey from the the state Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC).

The survey is part of required public outreach, before a Remedial Action Workplan can be completed by the end of 2012, according to the DTSC.

The 81-acre Chatsworth Park South, with 21 acres of recreational facilities, has been fenced off while an evaluation of lead, arsenic, dioxin and polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons in the soil and surface water has been underway.

Meanwhile, suggested dates for reopening parts of the park have come and gone.

Twelve acres in the western portion of the property were once utilized as a skeet shooting range by the Aqua Sierra Sportsman’s Club. Remnants of lead shot and clay pigeons in the soil resulted in some of the contamination.

The short survey asks residents to rate their knowledge and interest in the clean-up project. It offers an opportunity to be added to a mailing list. And it asks what community groups might also be interested. Finally, there is a place to write comments.

The historic with the landmark Hill-Palmer House and at the northeast corner of the park is not contaminated and remains available to the public.
