All the City's Traffic Lights Are Finally Synchronized

The $410 million effort coordinates traffic signals across the city under a centralized system.

The last of the city's nearly 4,400 traffic signals were synchronized Tuesday, marking completion of a project designed to lessen the amount of time that drivers spend in gridlock.

The Automated Traffic Surveillance & Control system, a $410 million effort to coordinate traffic signals across the city under a centralized system, could reduce the average amount of time drivers spend in traffic by one day per year, according to city transportation officials.

Synchronization is designed to increase travel speed by 12 percent, while decreasing the time spent stuck in traffic by 16 percent, according to Jaime de la Vega, general manager of the Los Angeles Department of Transportation.

The system coordinates traffic not only for vehicles, but also for pedestrians, cyclists and public transit. Transportation engineers can monitor traffic remotely through cameras throughout the city, make adjustments to signal timing and analyze traffic data to improve traffic flow. Police and emergency vehicles will also be able to take advantage of the new system.

The signals can be programmed to respond to unusual traffic scenarios involving crowd-heavy events at major sports and convention venues like the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, Dodger Stadium and Staples Center.

"As of today, we have synchronized every traffic signal in the City of Los Angeles," said Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, who was on hand at the intersection of South Broadway and Martin Luther King Boulevard to turn on the final traffic signal in the system.

He also commended the effort for potentially reducing the level of greenhouse gas emissions in the city, since vehicles will be less likely to idle and emit exhaust.

"By synchronizing our traffic signals, we will spend nearly a day less (per year) waiting and reduce pollution by nearly a metric ton of carbon every year," Villaraigosa said.

The synchronization system was first proposed prior to the 1984 Olympic games held in Los Angeles. But the project lapsed until 2005, when Villaraigosa lobbied for the allocation of $150 million in Proposition 1B money to complete the program.

What a crock of Buffalo p00p. Go take a drive say on Burbank Blvd., from Laurel to the 405, you will hit more red lights then in Amsterdam! Ventura Blvd., foghettaboutit you hit reds up & down, more Reds then Moscow, people go 15 or 50, many refuse to go 35 thuis the light dont matter. You get stuck behind some old coot going 15 mph & make no lights...this is BS & the CITY has wasted nothing but $$ on this......I CHALLENGE TONY VILLAR, the lights suck & if you drive in LA you know it!! Drivers in LA = :{ :o(

Agree 100% with Barney! This is just another sham by politicians to get votes. Politics over Policy. What is missing in this report is that population had QUADROUPLED since the 1984 Olympics, yet the infrastructure has remained virtually the same since WWII !!! It would be a useful study, if the drive time is compared today to 1984, then you will see this is laughing matter!!

You are so right. Sync my butt. I can't get to from one light to another with out hitting a red, if I gun it trying to make it I still have to slam on the breaks or like you said I get stuck behind someone cruising.
Jock February 20, 2013 at 01:46 pm
Synchronized does not mean so you can make every light. They have them synchronized so you WON'T make every light during rush hour. To "alleviate" the crush points and grid lock.. This becomes obvious when you go down Topanga from Chatsworth to Ventura at 1 pm and can make every light. Try it at 5 pm even on a holiday.
Sam Yorty, Jr. February 20, 2013 at 08:44 pm
HAte to agree, but they are right, traffic sucks here, the lights are lousy. You hit red, red, red, yadda yadda & Jock, you work for eLlay? You can never make it from Chatsworth to Ventura w/o many lights. The lights are synchronized to stop you, yeah thats it, that is Los Angeles double speak, lets raise taxes & further synch the lights so we don`t even move.......go look @ north bound sepulveda past Burbank,. or Burbank @ Sepulveda or the 405, really no gridlock, lots of it, lots of stopping, sitting thru 2, 3 or more reds to make a light, ah that is progress my friends....

And this definition from Wikipedia...
Attempts are often made to place traffic signals on a coordinated system so that drivers encounter long strings of green lights. The distinction between coordinated signals and synchronized signals is very important. Synchronized signals all change at the same time and are only used in special instances or in older systems. Coordinated systems are controlled from a master controller and are set up so lights "cascade" in sequence so platoons of vehicles can proceed through a continuous series of green lights.

Where the Sam Yorty do you get my agreement with this plan ? It sucks. But I am correct on why they do it. Also Yorty Jr., I did it today again at 13:30.today from Lassen no stops until after Sherman way. Slowed to one or two at the mall. It's at 5pm when it is supposed to work and it doesn't. PS I wasn't a fan of your dad.

Mathematically, this does not mean every light is synced in order to miss reds. That's not logically possible. It's the opposite some of the time: during rush hours, lights are set for cars to hit more reds on stretches that lead to congestion areas. It slows the feeds leading to the bottlenecks. So it may feel more frustrating to hit more reds in stretches at drive times, and unfortunately people won't be aware of the relatively decreased congestion at the grid points. (The congestion is still there, just not as bad by a hair.) Result is, drivers indeed are spending less time stopped in aggregate and getting home a little faster. Sadly drivers don't (can't) really notice it. No one can experience the alternative, the averted 16% worse at any rush hour moment that they'll never know about.
Traffic is still bad, just not "worse". That's not a great outcome. Every little bit, like this synchronization, is necessary, though it hardly solves the problem. Bolder infrastructure changes are needed. Judging from contemporary economics, debt, and politics of austerity, don't hold your breath. At least we have this band-aid!

Darn, after writing a response I am told I have not signed in, then in doing so it deleted my response, why arent I automatically signed in?

Ed Rowe, the then head of LA DOT really believed such a system could work, he convinced the state and federal government it would, It didn’t and it won’t, that was obvious after the first few installations were tested. It is money squandering like this that has gotten us to the mess we have today. Pie in the sky ideas that have no attachment to common sense, and, like the orange line across the west SFV, actually make congestion worse. How many of us sit at red lights time after time when there is NO traffic cross flow, and as we sit there a long line of cars pile up behind us. Sometimes the waits are so long that drivers get distracted and aren’t even paying attention when the light eventually goes green. Why do we have such long red periods? Simply halving the time would improve flow tremendously. There are so many simple –low cost- ways to improve traffic flow. We just don’t have anyone with the creativity, or motive to explore them.

Now let's hope Pasadena gets the message.

Another LA government boondoggle, they re-do this every few years it seems, just went from 170 to 405 on Burbank Blvd., took me 19 minutes!! NO traffic but lots of red lights, I went 35 & hit almost EVERY red light! Also, it was tow away time, but many cars parked in the no parking zone? Where is the meter maid contingent- & it took 7 minute to clear the intersection of Burbank Sepulveda 405 & I saw that the light work reel good for east bound Burbank it was almost solid traffic sockedin from 405 to Woodley, they used to have some traffic cops directing traffic, but I saw them all over @ Chipolte when I drove by.......ahhhh

We should be spending So Cal money to use the "LA river", diverting some to cisterns andRead More reservoirs. It no longer feeds a delta which must have been a very rich one 200 years ago. You are right, L.A. with it's huge population subsidizes most of State Taxes. That the Oil companies in the Central Valley are sucking up more water is no surprise. If we have several years of drought, we can drink 87 octane. We have been allowing water that falls here in L.A. to run into the ocean, saving little to none. We can go from 25-30" a year to 4. Suddenly on the 4 year we have high rates and rationing. Why ? Because it has always been the quick buck and expediency over thoughtful planning. in Israel, Masada is in one of the driest area's of the world. By channeling droplets of water, they were able to water a community of hundreds for years.

May 4, 2013 PROBLEM: Illegal immigrants AKA Undocumented workers DEFINITION: Illegal immigrantsRead More are those persons who enter a country without legal authorization. CAUSES, REASONS, AND PROVENANCE: The main reason for legal and illegal immigration is that people want and hope to improve their lives and the lives of their families. DISCUSSION: I think all would stipulate that anyone has the right to attempt to better his or her condition insofar as those efforts do not infringe upon the rights of others. Each country has the right and obligation to establish immigration laws for the orderly and rational assimilation of legal immigrants. Do the following comments provide justification for illegal immigration? 1. Illegal immigrants are looking to better their situations. 2. Illegal immigrants provide inexpensive labor and are hard workers. 3. This Nation was built upon immigrants. 4. It is virtually impossible to find and deport 12,000,000 illegal immigrants. The answers to the above four should be “no”. If anyone disagrees with that, I will appreciate his or her reasoning for a “yes” response. RECOMMENDED “COMPREHENSIVE” SOLUTION TO THIS PROBLEM: 1. A foolproof system must be devised, implemented, with substantial penalties for non-compliance that will verify a person’s legal authorization to work in the United States. 2. The concept of “anchor babies” should be eliminated, either by a pragmatic interpretation of the 14th Amendment (displaced the disputed Civil Rights legislation of 1866, which was passed by Congress over Andrew Johnson’s veto, and which was proposed by Congress six months after the 13th Amendment had been ratified), by Congressional legislation in accordance with Section 5 of the 14th Amendment, or by a Constitutional Amendment, that could and should be passed by the House and Senate and ratified by the requisite 38 states within a year. 3. There should be a $4.00 (arbitrary) per gallon increase in the federal excise tax on gasoline and diesel, at the pump. A tax credit would be allowed any U.S. taxpayer (who possesses a valid driver’s license and submits proof of vehicle registration and proof of insurance) in the amount of $2,000.00 per year (10,000 miles @ 20 MPG = 500 gallons, thus, 500 X $4.00 = $2,000.00). 4. Federal legislation should be passed that would eliminate all minimum wage laws. The “minimum wage” concept should be replaced with a massive expansion of the EITC regulations, which would cover all U.S. taxpayers who are older than 17 years of age. 5. Work with the Mexican and other Central and South America nations to enhance those economies. CONCLUSION: If the above changes were legislated, a substantial number of undocumented individuals would self-deport, since the economics of entering the United States, without authorization, would be substantially diminished. It is logical that a newborn should assume the nationality of the mother, regardless of the venue of the birth, therefore, the strategy of an undocumented mother giving birth in the United States should be of no consequence. NOTE: This will be a process, i.e., not an overnight solution. mz mikiesmoky@aol.com Last modified: July 24, 2010 Last modified - May 4, 2013
