11 Candidates File for Council District 12 Seat

Eleven candidates filed by the Saturday deadline to succeed retiring District 12 City Councilman Greig Smith in the 2011 Primary Election.

The election will be March 8, with a runoff on May 17 if no candidate wins a majority of the vote. The 7 even-numbered City Council district seats are up for election. There are 15 seats on the Council.

Here's how the election works. First, candidates file with the city clerk their intention to run. Then they circulate nomination petitions through Dec. 8.

When candidates collect 1,000 to 2,000 valid signatures of registered voters within their district, they qualify for the ballot. However, if they gather 500 to 1,000 signatures they can pay a $300 filing fee to get on the ballot.
