Street Race Smashup Sends 2 Women to Hospital With Serious Head Injuries

Police are hunting a second car that fled the scene.

Two women suffered serious head injuries in a collision in Chatsworth Wednesday that police believe may have involved street racing.

The car the two women were in hit a curb, a pole and a tree before coming to rest on the street, said Los Angeles Police Department Sgt. Cameron Dunnet, watch commander of the Valley Traffic Division. The crash also knocked down a 10-foot section of block wall.

The collision took place about 4:15 p.m. where Corbin Avenue curves on a downhill slope near Hiawatha Street, north of Devonshire Street.

  • Firefighters Extricate Two at Chatsworth Crash Scene

Firefighters used the Jaws-of-Life to pry the women from the vehicle. The victims were taken to Northridge Hospital Medical Center for treatment, said Brian Humphrey of the Los Angeles Fire Department.

"We are also looking for another vehicle that fled the scene after the accident," Dunnet said. "Witnesses told us that the two cars were racing and we want to talk to the driver about leaving the scene of an accident."

The second driver would likely be cited for hit-and-run and could face additional charges if it is proven that street racing was involved in the collision, Dunnet said.

Anyone with information on the collision was asked to call the LAPD's Valley Traffic Division at 818-644-8000.

I know some people will evaluate this comment as "racist," but I've noticed most of our "hit-and-runs," have been found to be perpetrated by illegal immigrants. Since our Mayor Villaraigossa has decided Illegals should be given drivers licenses, I can't help but question his judgement...
cat c October 11, 2012 at 08:47 am
yeah thats racist.........for sure and since it was a racing accident with young people racing which doesn't surprise me since all I hear all night is the sound of cars gunning their engines and tires burning rubber its no surpise...if it is due to racing I really don't care about the people hurt..if someone innocent was hurt or killed I would care..sick of the stupid street racing around here...
Denise October 11, 2012 at 12:49 pm
Are you serious? Show me facts about illegal immigrants and hit and run accidents. The most recent hit ant run or car v car have been intoxicated middle aged white women. Also, to support your astounding ignorance, Villaragosa hasn't the power to grant driver's license to anyone. That power is above his pay grade.
The one fact you have correct is you are a racist. No doubt.
kevin October 11, 2012 at 01:30 pm
i would not feel sorry at all for these people. look at the last picture. if you have a tree attached to your car and knock down a block wall and your car looks like "that" and you are rite in front of a 45mph speed limit sign then you deserve it .
Zookeeper91326 October 11, 2012 at 02:29 pm
Call me racist, but facts are facts. Ask anyone in law enforcement. The uptick in "hit-and-run," accidents directly co-relates to the increase in illegal immigrants in Los Angeles. We rarely heard of hit-and-run accidents 15 -20 years ago. Former MEChA spokesman, Villaraigosa has been campaigning for drivers licenses for illegals for years...as Mayor, he holds influence over the City Council. His Democrat controlled City Council DID vote to allow "undocumented immigrants," to obtain drivers licenses. Now, do you think these "undocumented immigrants," will obtain and RETAIN car insurance? Do you think they will not flee the scene of an accident? Good luck with that...
Zookeeper91326 October 11, 2012 at 02:34 pm
Oh, and by the way, Denise, illegal aliens come in all colors, including "middle aged "white," women."
Joseph October 11, 2012 at 03:38 pm
@Zookeeper I either way don't think illegals with DL matters for years I've known immigrants that buy cars not reg. and still drive them with out DL. Of course they are going to run afterwards that includes intoxicated citizens.
Kim Neal October 11, 2012 at 11:19 pm
I'm with Denise on this...this has nothing to do with those people who just want to work, you know, the ones you can actually count on...this has to do with spoiled brats whose parents are guilt tripping all over themselves...since when does an illegal have a Beamer or any car beyond 1980?
Maureen Barrett October 12, 2012 at 02:56 am
I have no educated comment on the illegal alien/drivers license situation, so I will will not address that, besides this story was not about that. I agree with Cat C's comment to the extent that it's always race night around Chatsworth. Solo street racing is common on Canoga north of Devonshire, its pretty much the norm most nights. Apparently the police don't care, as i have called many times. This is where all the big boys test and play with
their toys. Problem is, this is our neighborhood, our home and our families lives at risk 3, 4 nights a week and they don't do anything about it. Why is that?
Kim Neal October 12, 2012 at 10:36 am
I live on Roscoe and have had 2 cars in my yard in 3 years...my neighbor's have had some as well...One day, out my window, 2 teens raced by. I could hear them coming. Just as they passed me, an LAPD also passed opposite the teens..It was poetic justice! I wouldn't believe it if I didn't see it with my own eyes...I was clapping and cheering. We are sick of these selfish brats.
Joseph October 12, 2012 at 04:11 pm
I use to drive by the street to "interfere" with them until me doing that got to dangerous
truthseeker October 12, 2012 at 06:30 pm
The city council also doesn't have the power to grant licenses. They can pass as many resolutions as they want still won't happen, controlled by the Democratic majority or not.
truthseeker October 12, 2012 at 06:33 pm
Corbin between Rinaldi and Devonshire has been a haven for street racers and accidents since being opened. Just take a look at the number of busted trees along that stretch. And yet I haven't seen one traffic cop staked out there like they are at Rinaldi and Wilbur on an almost daily basis.
Don Jagg October 13, 2012 at 03:12 am
Drag racing south on Corbin, downhill through the curves? Something's not wired right in your head. It's a blessing that they lost control. The signal at Devonshire is almost always red. Blast through that at 4:30PM at 60MPH and someone dies.
Don Jagg October 13, 2012 at 03:23 am
Plummer and Canoga is also a hotspot almost every morning at 2AM. Wednesday night/Thursday morning is guaranteed. City law says that if caught racing, you risk confiscation of your vehicle. LAPD should go and grab as many as they can. Sell those fancy cars and use the money to pay for overtime for the detectives so they can go and solve some crimes.

CORRECTION: Democrat Governor Jerry Brown signed legislation allowing drivers licenses for illegal aliens/"undocumented immigrants.". DEMOCRAT MAJORITY L.A.City council approved NOT impounding vehicles of drivers without drivers licenses. MOST hit-and-run accidents are perpetrated by unlicensed drivers: http://losangeles.cbslocal.com/2012/10/11/report-illegal-drivers-behind-high-hit-and-run-rate-in-la/
“In Los Angeles in terms of hit-and-runs, it’s way outside the norm,” said Rosenberg. “On a national level, there’s about 11 percent of traffic collisions end up being hit-and-runs…in Los Angeles, it’s 50 percent.” Rosenberg, whose son was killed by an unlicensed driver in November 2010, said the actual number of hit-and-run accidents by unlicensed drivers may be much higher because the LAPD does not take a report if no one is injured. “You’ve got a very high concentrated population of illegal aliens in Los Angeles; they drive,” he said. “Matter of fact, the police chief actually encourages them to drive as long as they buy insurance.”
Don Jagg October 13, 2012 at 01:58 pm
Thanks for the article. It was an interesting read. What does it have to do with this incident? It's pretty obvious to most of us that unlicensed illegal aliens were not street racing expensive cars down Corbin. I'm almost certain that we will find that the hit and run driver is young and scared, had just made the worse decision in his life and followed it up with the second worse decision. The fact is, there are a lot of unsafe drivers out there, mostly young, who don't understand that their world could get turned upside down in a blink of the eye. That is the lesson that needs to learned from this incident, not that Brown and Villa are world class idiots.
As far as licensing, that started when the President created a new class of qusai-citizen. The illegal with privileges. "One Bill" Gil Cededa finally got his foot in the door.

Don, I'm pretty sure you and I are in the same boat with mostly deserted streets off the beaten path late at night. These guys bring their cars up here and just open them up, going as fast as possible four or five times up and back, always blowing the stop sign at Canoga & Rinaldi and with no concern for those of us who live here. It's all fun and games for the idiots until somebody blows a tire and ends up going through a house. Wh do we need to talk to to have the VST (volunteer surveillance team) the LAPD sends out. They just park, wait and get stuff on video...maybe then they will have more patrol cars in these areas, workload permitting.

We should be spending So Cal money to use the "LA river", diverting some to cisterns andRead More reservoirs. It no longer feeds a delta which must have been a very rich one 200 years ago. You are right, L.A. with it's huge population subsidizes most of State Taxes. That the Oil companies in the Central Valley are sucking up more water is no surprise. If we have several years of drought, we can drink 87 octane. We have been allowing water that falls here in L.A. to run into the ocean, saving little to none. We can go from 25-30" a year to 4. Suddenly on the 4 year we have high rates and rationing. Why ? Because it has always been the quick buck and expediency over thoughtful planning. in Israel, Masada is in one of the driest area's of the world. By channeling droplets of water, they were able to water a community of hundreds for years.

May 4, 2013 PROBLEM: Illegal immigrants AKA Undocumented workers DEFINITION: Illegal immigrantsRead More are those persons who enter a country without legal authorization. CAUSES, REASONS, AND PROVENANCE: The main reason for legal and illegal immigration is that people want and hope to improve their lives and the lives of their families. DISCUSSION: I think all would stipulate that anyone has the right to attempt to better his or her condition insofar as those efforts do not infringe upon the rights of others. Each country has the right and obligation to establish immigration laws for the orderly and rational assimilation of legal immigrants. Do the following comments provide justification for illegal immigration? 1. Illegal immigrants are looking to better their situations. 2. Illegal immigrants provide inexpensive labor and are hard workers. 3. This Nation was built upon immigrants. 4. It is virtually impossible to find and deport 12,000,000 illegal immigrants. The answers to the above four should be “no”. If anyone disagrees with that, I will appreciate his or her reasoning for a “yes” response. RECOMMENDED “COMPREHENSIVE” SOLUTION TO THIS PROBLEM: 1. A foolproof system must be devised, implemented, with substantial penalties for non-compliance that will verify a person’s legal authorization to work in the United States. 2. The concept of “anchor babies” should be eliminated, either by a pragmatic interpretation of the 14th Amendment (displaced the disputed Civil Rights legislation of 1866, which was passed by Congress over Andrew Johnson’s veto, and which was proposed by Congress six months after the 13th Amendment had been ratified), by Congressional legislation in accordance with Section 5 of the 14th Amendment, or by a Constitutional Amendment, that could and should be passed by the House and Senate and ratified by the requisite 38 states within a year. 3. There should be a $4.00 (arbitrary) per gallon increase in the federal excise tax on gasoline and diesel, at the pump. A tax credit would be allowed any U.S. taxpayer (who possesses a valid driver’s license and submits proof of vehicle registration and proof of insurance) in the amount of $2,000.00 per year (10,000 miles @ 20 MPG = 500 gallons, thus, 500 X $4.00 = $2,000.00). 4. Federal legislation should be passed that would eliminate all minimum wage laws. The “minimum wage” concept should be replaced with a massive expansion of the EITC regulations, which would cover all U.S. taxpayers who are older than 17 years of age. 5. Work with the Mexican and other Central and South America nations to enhance those economies. CONCLUSION: If the above changes were legislated, a substantial number of undocumented individuals would self-deport, since the economics of entering the United States, without authorization, would be substantially diminished. It is logical that a newborn should assume the nationality of the mother, regardless of the venue of the birth, therefore, the strategy of an undocumented mother giving birth in the United States should be of no consequence. NOTE: This will be a process, i.e., not an overnight solution. mz mikiesmoky@aol.com Last modified: July 24, 2010 Last modified - May 4, 2013
