Cal State Northridge police sought a man Wednesday for groping women near the campus.
Five assaults were reported Tuesday between 11:20 a.m. and 1:45 p.m., campus police Chief Anne Glavin said.
"He's obviously picking on students, but the incidents occurred off campus. Obviously someone is preying on victims in the area," she said.
Most of the assaults occurred east of Reseda Boulevard on Prairie and Vincennes streets, Glavin said.
The man engaged women in conversation, then asked for a hug in some cases, Glavin said. He then grabbed the victims' buttock and fled.
The mustachioed suspect was described as in his late 20s and up to 5 feet 8 inches tall, she said. He was carrying a backpack and wearing a black baseball hat, black T-shirt and black pants.
Similar crimes near the campus have been reported to Los Angeles police at the Devonshire Station.
Anyone with more information was asked to call campus police Sgt. Detective Dana Archer at (818) 677-3826 or Detective Mark Benavidez at (818) 677-3901.
