Police: Phone Scammers Are Getting Aggressive

Their latest ploy is to pretend they're federal fugitive or bail agents, says the Los Angeles Police Department.

Police today warned the public to beware of a phone scam in which callers claim to be federal fugitive or bail agents.

The phone calls originate from a number beginning with 844-653, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

The callers are “extremely forceful,” insisting that the call recipient is hiding individuals with outstanding warrants, police said.

“This is an elaborate scam in an attempt for you to send money. Do not send them money,” according to an LAPD statement that advises anyone receiving such a call to contact their phone carrier.
