An Encino man was behind the found pipe bomb in Northridge Wednesday that shut down a busy intersection and snarled traffic for hours in that part of the Valley, police say.

David Patton, 52, is behind bars today, authorities said.

Police found the bomb on the floor of an SUV during a traffic stop about 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at Reseda Boulevard and Devonshire Street, causing the evacuation of businesses and residences in a quarter-mile radius.

Patton was arrested under the suspicion of reckless possession of a destructive device, and was held on $500,000 bail, Los Angeles police Lt. Jason Zabel said..

Police summoned a bomb squad to the scene and the device was safely detonated by the bomb squad.
