UPDATE: Man Slain Outside 'College Inn' Sports Bar Near Cal State Northridge

LAPD units respond to a "shots fired, possible 187 (homicide)" call at 2:30 a.m.

A man in his 40s was shot and killed Tuesday morning outside The College Inn sports bar in Northridge, authorities said.

Around 2:30 a.m., Devonshire Division LAPD units were called to the 8600 block of Lindley Avenue for a "shots fired" call. An officer was overheard on the police scanner notifying other responding units about a possible "187 (homicide) in the parking lot."

Patch responded to the scene to get more details, but the sergeant stated that no information could be given at the time, due to LAPD's active search for the murder suspect and the pending investigation by homicide detectives.

In the small parking lot adjacent to railroad tracks that run parallel to Roscoe Boulevard, Patch observed L.A. Fire Department responders place a sheet over the male victim's body. A bloodied wound in his upper torso could be seen as he lay on his back prior to covering.

Police said the man suffered a gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene. According to a desk officer at the LAPD's Devonshire Station, the victim suffered a gunshot wound to the back of his neck.

LAPD spent some time interviewing two witnesses still at the scene: a man and a woman who looked to be in their 20s. The woman's face appeared to be distraught as police escorted them into a patrol car and drove away. Four vehicles possibly belonging to the night's bar patrons remained at the scene.

Authorities withheld the name of the dead man pending family notification, said coroner's Assistant Chief Ed Winter.

The bar is about a half-mile south of California State University Northridge, but there was no immediate indication of a connection with the campus, an officer said. No arrests were immediately reported.
