A man who lay down on the railroad tracks in Northridge Thursday was struck and killed by a Metrolink passenger train.

It was an apparent suicide, Andrew Chick of the LAPD Valley Traffic Division told the Daily Sundial, after reviewing video of the accident near Nordhoff Street and Tampa Avenue.

The victim, who appeared to be about 20, was on the tracks under the Nordhoff bridge when he was struck at 4:45 p.m., Mike Zabowski, of the Valley Traffic Division, told the newspaper.

“It takes a couple miles or more to stop a train,” Zabowski said. “They did see him and try to stop and warn him with horns.”

Metrolink passengers were taken by bus from the scene, Zabowski told the Sundial.
