House Fire Leads to Marijuana Growing Bust in Northridge

Police find a host of illegal activity and take one person into custody.

One person was arrested when a marijuana grove was discovered in a Northridge home Tuesday after the structure caught fire and was quickly extinguished, police said.

An attic fire was reported in 9400 block of Donna Avenue, near Plummer Street, at 6:30 p.m. and was doused in less than 25 minutes, said spokesman Brian Humphrey of the Los Angeles Fire Department.

Police were then called to the scene when it was learned that marijuana was being grown at the property, said Sgt. Andy Whitman of Los Angeles Police Department's Devonshire Station.

He said a counterfeit clothing operation was also going on at the house and that some of the phony material was part of the reason why the fire started.

One person was arrested, but his identity was being withheld because of an ongoing investigation, said Officer Capa of the station's gangs and narcotics division.

He also would not say exactly how much marijuana was found.
