Hot Time Is Crime Time in Chatsworth

While Chatsworth crime took a sharp drop during the last three weeks, the old adage linking heat and violence continues to prove true.

During the 21 days from July 3 through July 24 Chatsworth experienced 42 crimes, down 12 crimes from the last 21-day reporting period. This is an average of 2 crimes a day, down from 2.57 crimes a day, a reduction of almost 30 percent.

And while overall crime was down, instances of violent crime remain at a heightened level. Chatsworth usually averages about one violent crime during each reporting period, however, there were 9 from June 12 through July 2 and an additional 5 aggravated assaults during the current cycle.

In spite of this trend, violent crime actually made up a small fraction of total crime, 8.2 percent. The remainder of crimes were avoidable issues such as theft from cars. 

The total breakdown of crime for the period is: 18 thefts from cars, (down 2) 10 thefts (down 1), 8 burglaries (down 3), 5 aggravated assaults (down 3), 1 grand theft auto (down  4).

While grand theft auto has traditionally been a common crime in Chatsworth, recent months have seen a steep decline.
