UPDATE: Horse and Rider Killed by Metrolink Train

A 36-year-old North Hollywood man and his horse were struck and killed Friday afternoon.

The Los Angeles Police Department is currently investigating the death of a horse and its 35-year-old rider who were struck by a Metrolink commuter train Friday afternoon. The horse and the man riding it were pronounced dead at the scene.

Jose Hidalgo, 35, of North Hollywood, was spotted on the tracks, mounted and trying to get his horse to move, but the animal stood still as the commuter train bore down on him, according to witnesses and coroner's spokesman.

The accident was reported at 3:01 p.m. at 9370 N. San Fernando Road in Sun Valley, Erik Scott of the Los Angeles Fire Department told Patch. The location is about one mile north of the Sun Valley station. The case has been turned over to the LAPD to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The horse and rider were struck by the Antelope Valley No. 216 train. No one on the train was injured. Buses were deployed to shuttle passengers to the Burbank station where they could catch the next train to Union Station.
