Fire Burns Unoccupied Home in Northridge

Quick-acting neighbors alerted the fire department.

A fire burned Sunday at an unoccupied home in Northridge, a city fire official said.

The blaze was reported at 5:32 p.m. in the 10300 block of Garden Grove Avenue, Brian Humphrey of the Los Angeles Fire Department said.

"The occupants of the home were away at the time," Humphrey said. "The fire was reported by neighbors."

Humphrey said the fire burned in the garage of the 2100 square-foot single story home, but the flames did not extend to any other structures. With 27 firefighters on the scene, the blaze was under control in 20 minutes, he said.

"It was because of the quick-acting neighbors that we were able to get there in time and get this fire confined to the garage," Humphrey said.

The fire was deemed accidental, and may have been sparked by a mechanical or electrical problem under the hood of the vehicle inside the garage, Humphrey said. The official cause of the fire remained under investigation.
