Crime & Safety

Crime Took a Holiday on 9/11

With the end of summer and the beginning of school, the crime rate in Chatsworth has dropped off, police data shows.

During the 39 days from Aug. 16 through Sept. 24, there were 66 reported crimes in the Chatsworth area, according to the LAPD's Crime Mapping website, which aggregates daily crime reports directly from the Police Department.

Chatsworth experienced a dramatic rise in crime during the summer, including a major spike in violent crime and murder, which have historically been low in the area. However, with the end of summer and the beginning of school, the crime rate has dropped off to a more typical level.

During this reporting period Chatsworth experienced an average of 1.6 crimes a day, down from an average of two or more crimes a day during the summer months. Four were violent crimes.

The 66 crimes were comprised of 23 thefts from vehicles, 19 thefts, 16 burglaries, four grand theft autos, three aggravated assaults and one robbery.

It appears as though even the criminal element in Chatsworth showed some reverence for the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. There were no crimes reported in Chatsworth from Sept. 9 through Sept. 13.
