Canoga Park Standoff Appears to Have Been One-Sided

No suspect was found in house search.

After nearly six hours, a standoff between police and, well, nobody, ended quietly Thursday afternoon when law enforcement officials determined the Canoga Park house they'd been surrounding was empty.

Law enforcement officials from the Los Angeles Police Department's Topanga Division issued a statement at 9 a.m. Thursday saying the division was working a barricaded suspect incident on the 7300 Block of Remmet Ave. Neighbors on the scene said police activity had been going on since between 6 and 7 a.m. and the suspect's next door neighbor, Saul Ortiz, said SWAT team members asked him to evacuate at around 7 a.m.

Ortiz also said the police had been out to the suspect's house within the last two months to respond to shots being fired into the air. Another neighbor, who emerged from his home following the incident was incensed by the whole thing.

"This is the third m----- f---ing time in three months he's caused the street to be closed," said the man—who didn't give his name—to the entire press corps.

Police told CBS News the suspect has a history of shooting firearms from his home.

Various news sources reported the incident stemmed from a domestic dispute which led to the wife of the suspect to call 911, explaining he was possibly armed.

Police arrived and cordoned off a two-block area around the house. At about noon, a series of six shots, followed by another four, were heard coming from the area and bystanders believed they were rounds of tear gas being shot into the house. A police dog was also seen being led near the house.

At 12:45 p.m., the LAPD released a statement saying officers were finishing up at the scene and shortly after 1 p.m. police cars and the SWAT vehicle that had been parked near the home left the scene.
