Chatsworth Man Guilty in Title Fraud Case

A 42-year-old Chatsworth man was convicted Wednesday of several charges for falsely claiming ownership of an apartment complex in Oxnard and trying to collect rent from tenants, according to the Ventura County District Attorney's Office.

Laureano Labasay was found guilty on three counts of recording a false document and one count of forgery, a statement from the district attorney read.

In 2011, Labasay recorded a false transfer of title for a 32-unit apartment building and filed it with the County Clerk's Recorder Office.

After his first arrest and release on bail, he falsely filed two more documents with the same office asserting ownership, according to the statement.

Labasay is scheduled for sentencing on Oct. 8 and is facing a maximum of five years in jail.
