Beware of 'Distraction Burglaries,' Police Warn

Please do not open your door to any strangers, officers urge residents.

[From the LAPD Devonshire Division]

There has been an increase in "distraction burglaries" in Devonshire Division.

This type of burglary involves a suspect knocking on the victim's door. The suspect will have a reason to come in the house (i.e.; to use the restroom or to get a drink of water).

Once the suspect is in the house, he/she will remove property, then leave. The victim does not realize until later that the property is missing. It is important to realize the suspect may by a man or woman, young or old. They may have children with them.

Please do not open your door to any strangers.

If someone knocks on your door, speak through the door. If you are alone, turn the television on so it sounds like more people are there. If they say they need help, tell them you will call 9-1-1 for them.

In some cases, the suspects have worn yellow vests and claimed to work for DWP. Remember, most corporations require there employees for carry an identification. Ask to see the I.D. through a window.

Do not worry about hurting anyone's feelings by not opening your door. Your safety is most important!
