Arraignment of Chatsworth Man Delayed

Aaron Clay Turner, held in violent crime spree, misses court appearance due to hospitalization.

A Chatsworth man accused of stabbing his mother, assaulting a peace officer and committing a carjacking Friday missed his scheduled arraignment Wednesday, so a bench warrant was issued, according to court officials.

Aaron Clay Tanner, 30, remains in custody, but is hospitalized due to injuries he allegedly sustained during Friday's crime spree.

Tanner will not be arraigned until sheriff’s deputies bring him into court; officials said they are unclear when that might be.

Tanner was charged  with one count each of assault with a deadly weapon, a knife; assault by means likely to produce great bodily injury; kidnapping for carjacking; attempted carjacking; and felony evading law enforcement, according to a release issued by the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.

He additionally was charged with two felony counts of carjacking, two misdemeanor counts of hit-and-run driving and nine felony counts of assault on a peace officer, authorities said.

Bail was recommended at slightly more than $1.9 million.

The string of crimes started with the stabbing of Tanner’s mother on the Antelope Valley Freeway near Sylmar and continued into the Santa Clarita Valley.

Tanner’s mother, authorities said, was pushed from the car. Authorities said she is expected to survive her wounds.

The spree included crashing into vehicles, carjacking and crashing a vehicle with a 4-year-old child inside, carjacking a sheriff’s patrol car, and leading deputies on a chase and crashing that vehicle, too. The child reportedly was rescued from the first carjacked car.

He, his mother and several sheriff’s deputies were treated for injuries in connection with the melee, authorities said.

If convicted, the defendant faces a possible sentence of life in prison with the possibility of parole.
