Is Antonio Villaraigosa Ready for His Closeup?

He's been all over the tube schmoozing political reporters. What are news reports and the blogosphere saying about him?

The glare of the television spotlight has landed on Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, but is he ready for his closeup?

Villaraigosa, 59, who has never met a camera he didn't like, has brought his broad smile to Charlotte, NC, as chairman of the Democratic National Convention. He's termed-out as Los Angeles' mayor and now he's on the national stage, flogging the re-election bid of President Barack Obama.

He's been all over the tube schmoozing reporters. But while he is otherwise occupied and absent, Los Angeles is on the verge of going broke. There's an awful lot of running going on. Just who is the candidate here?

"I think it's important to have a little bit about who you are. Most people don't know who the mayor of Los Angeles is, or the chairman of the [convention], so it's important to have a little biography, how that life brought me where I am today..." he told the Los Angeles Times.

He'll get six minutes in the great hall Thursday to let eveyone know. But is the public ready for what he told Politico: “I’m a Democrat with a small ‘d.’ I believe very strongly in what I call the radical center,” said Villaraigosa. “I believe that the President is moving down that path.”

That doesn't sound like the same drum the President is beating.

Well, maybe. The Daily News quotes Raphael Sonenshein, director of the Pat Brown Institute of Public Affairs at Cal State Los Angeles, this way: "He clearly has made up any lost ground he had in 2008 and is now on the A team with the President," Sonenshein said. "He will be the principal speaker as far as Latinos are concerned.

"And the way the election is looking, he will be playing a valuable role for the President in the Southwest and Florida to get out the Latino vote."

But Villaraigosa, who had to learn Spanish as a second language and burned through a marriage and two TV-reporter girlfriends, carries a lot of personal baggage with him as he tries to raise his national profile. He clearly wants to be in the front of the line when Obama starts picking players for his second-term team.

And he joins "Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom and Attorney General Kamala Harris at the top of a list of Democrats considered likely contenders for governor or U.S. Senate," reports the Sacramento Bee.

USC's Sherry Bebitch Jeffe weighs-in at Fox & Hounds saying "Should the President win re-election, he’ll owe something to the Latino vote, and L.A.’s Mayor is working hard on that. U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood has already announced he’s leaving and it’s in transportation that Villaraigosa has had some of his major successes."

"It would have been really easy to write him off a couple of years ago," Dan Schnur, director of the Jesse Unruh Institute of Politics at the University of Southern California told the Bee. "But now you'd have to consider him as one of the next generation of potential leaders of California."

Is he interested in even higher office? Villaraigosa told the Des Moines Register that he’s “looking to finish my job the way I started, with a bang. I’m working ’til 11:59:59 on June 30 and then I’m riding into the sunset for a while."

Really?

Tony V is a sleaze and a creep. He only highlights how out of touch Obama is with everyone outside his tight little group of sycophants. Try to run this jerk for US Senate and give the seat to a GOP.

i wish he was here...working
we have so many issues facing us, and he continues to kick the can down the road let the next guy deal with it, he must be thinking
Zookeeper91326 September 5, 2012 at 04:58 pm
He's never focused on our city's issues before...why would he start now? The Democrats lost credibility by appointing him the Chairman of the Democratic Convention...an obvious ploy for the Latino vote. But, Latinos don't really respect adulterers or egocentric men, any more than anyone else. He is thought of as a joke to most Angelinos...no one respects him.

This perfectly exposes the absolute stupidity of the people of Los Angeles who voted in this bottom drawer politician. The people are to blame for the Socialism overtaking America.

The Mayor, Meyor Villababoso, de Alcalde de Lost Angeles, is a stumbling, bumbling fool. He's so bad not even the Mexicans want to come here anymore!

Just when you think you've heard it all about Tony there's another stupid thing. Hopefully he'll fade into the sunset and Angelinos won't forget what an incompetent he is.

Yes, if you notice, CA with it's Democrat majority, and the cities within CA, like L.A., San Bernadino, Fresno, etc, (as well as other States dominated by Democrats), are all going bankrupt. Yet, they all want to blame conservative policies? Stupid, ignorant, unionized, welfare-minded, deadbeat, brain-washed, nanny-state cretins!
Zookeeper91326 September 6, 2012 at 03:49 am
You're so right. What was the DNC thinking???
The MOG September 6, 2012 at 04:09 am
I think a lot of it was a kind of reverse racism, if that's the word for it. People became excited about voting for the 1st Mexican Mayor in ages, so. They way I see it, on the Nation level, the president was elected for the same, raced based perspective. Only in the case of Pres. Obama, people got all dewy-eyed about electing the 1st Black. Even though he's not really black. There's no shame in being mulatto. It's cool! So, why call yourself something your not? Does he really think he's black. The KKK claim your black, even if your hair is yellow, & your skin is lite, if you have just a drop of "black" blood. You see? It sounds racist to me. The Mayor is American, NOT Mexican. A dz years ago, I volunteered in 1CD race for the candidate who ran against the current councilman. I can't tell you how sorry I am, that working the phone banks, I found that the most important thing for these voters was not issues, but race. They all wanted to know if my guy was Mexican. My reply was, " No, he's American." I don't like this Raza Business. I think it's ugly, and La Raza are the Mayors no. 1 supporters. That's his crowd, and those are his people. It's true, liberal democratic policies are responcible for our "mess" in L.A. Just like the '92 Riot was the cap off to the Bradley years. In retrospect, during the Yorty years this city was effecently managed, with attractive nieghborhoods, & a fiscally responcible city government. We were once a premere City. Look at it now, after them!
Joseph September 6, 2012 at 12:00 pm
I strongly dislike that guy. Such a sell out and inadequite to help L.A. in anyway.

Interesting statistic - it just goes to show you can be incredibly rich and still have concern for the welfare of the other citizens in the country. I don't see these Dems voting Republican tax policy any time soon.

We should be spending So Cal money to use the "LA river", diverting some to cisterns andRead More reservoirs. It no longer feeds a delta which must have been a very rich one 200 years ago. You are right, L.A. with it's huge population subsidizes most of State Taxes. That the Oil companies in the Central Valley are sucking up more water is no surprise. If we have several years of drought, we can drink 87 octane. We have been allowing water that falls here in L.A. to run into the ocean, saving little to none. We can go from 25-30" a year to 4. Suddenly on the 4 year we have high rates and rationing. Why ? Because it has always been the quick buck and expediency over thoughtful planning. in Israel, Masada is in one of the driest area's of the world. By channeling droplets of water, they were able to water a community of hundreds for years.

May 4, 2013 PROBLEM: Illegal immigrants AKA Undocumented workers DEFINITION: Illegal immigrantsRead More are those persons who enter a country without legal authorization. CAUSES, REASONS, AND PROVENANCE: The main reason for legal and illegal immigration is that people want and hope to improve their lives and the lives of their families. DISCUSSION: I think all would stipulate that anyone has the right to attempt to better his or her condition insofar as those efforts do not infringe upon the rights of others. Each country has the right and obligation to establish immigration laws for the orderly and rational assimilation of legal immigrants. Do the following comments provide justification for illegal immigration? 1. Illegal immigrants are looking to better their situations. 2. Illegal immigrants provide inexpensive labor and are hard workers. 3. This Nation was built upon immigrants. 4. It is virtually impossible to find and deport 12,000,000 illegal immigrants. The answers to the above four should be “no”. If anyone disagrees with that, I will appreciate his or her reasoning for a “yes” response. RECOMMENDED “COMPREHENSIVE” SOLUTION TO THIS PROBLEM: 1. A foolproof system must be devised, implemented, with substantial penalties for non-compliance that will verify a person’s legal authorization to work in the United States. 2. The concept of “anchor babies” should be eliminated, either by a pragmatic interpretation of the 14th Amendment (displaced the disputed Civil Rights legislation of 1866, which was passed by Congress over Andrew Johnson’s veto, and which was proposed by Congress six months after the 13th Amendment had been ratified), by Congressional legislation in accordance with Section 5 of the 14th Amendment, or by a Constitutional Amendment, that could and should be passed by the House and Senate and ratified by the requisite 38 states within a year. 3. There should be a $4.00 (arbitrary) per gallon increase in the federal excise tax on gasoline and diesel, at the pump. A tax credit would be allowed any U.S. taxpayer (who possesses a valid driver’s license and submits proof of vehicle registration and proof of insurance) in the amount of $2,000.00 per year (10,000 miles @ 20 MPG = 500 gallons, thus, 500 X $4.00 = $2,000.00). 4. Federal legislation should be passed that would eliminate all minimum wage laws. The “minimum wage” concept should be replaced with a massive expansion of the EITC regulations, which would cover all U.S. taxpayers who are older than 17 years of age. 5. Work with the Mexican and other Central and South America nations to enhance those economies. CONCLUSION: If the above changes were legislated, a substantial number of undocumented individuals would self-deport, since the economics of entering the United States, without authorization, would be substantially diminished. It is logical that a newborn should assume the nationality of the mother, regardless of the venue of the birth, therefore, the strategy of an undocumented mother giving birth in the United States should be of no consequence. NOTE: This will be a process, i.e., not an overnight solution. mz mikiesmoky@aol.com Last modified: July 24, 2010 Last modified - May 4, 2013
