I have been in the fitness industry for over 40 years. Having been on my school softball team, played flag football and basketball, and later women's soccer, I have been physically active for a long time. I joined Jack Lalanne's gym back in the early 1970's and have been working out in one way or the other ever since. I even earned a brown belt in Judo. Now as a certified fitness instructor and Pilates teacher for over 12 years, the one question I have been asked the most is:
"What is the best exercise I can do?"
The answer is simple; the one you WILL do. That means, an actiivity/exercise you either love to do or... hate the least. If you hate to ride a bike, then why try? If it hurts to jog you are not going to stick with it. If the treadmill bores you to tears, you will soon quit.
So think hard about setting out on that new exercise program with something you enjoy. Maybe it's taking dance classes. Or join a gym and try some Zumba or kickboxing. Hiking is a wonderful way to exercise and get outdoors too. Go to meetup.com and join my hiking group called the Calabasas Day Hikers. It's free and we do beginner hikes as well as advanced.
If you find you start an exercise routine and just don't stick to it don't get discouraged. Don't beat yourself up and call yourself a quitter. Simply use it as information about something you don't care to do then try something else. Don't give up. Keep looking and hopefully you will find a way to increase your heart rate and love it. Well, maybe liking it is more like it.
As with all of my fit tips, please check first with your doctor.
