Chabad Celebrates Purim in Costume

Jewish neighbors recall how Queen Esther saved her people.

No one was late for a very important date when celebrated “ in Wonderland” with an Alice in Wonderland-themed costume carnival on Thursday.

The party offered "a unique way for Jews of diverse affiliations and backgrounds to unite and celebrate Purim together," according to Rabbi Yossi Spritzer.

The carnival included a caricaturist, a hat airbrush artist, arts & crafts plus the traditional reading of the Megilla scroll of Esther, which depicts the story of Purim.  Participants also viewed a multi-media slide show illustrating the historical events of Purim.

"Purim commemorates the salvation of the Jewish community from near destruction at the hands of a power-crazed Persian vizier named Haman. As recorded in the Biblical Book of Esther, Haman nearly secured the King’s permission to wipe out the Jewish community, only to be foiled at the last moment by Queen Esther and her uncle Mordechai.

"The wicked plot is turned upside-down and Haman winds up hung on the gallows that he had constructed for the Jews," explained Rabbi Adam Greenwald in a recent Patch column.
