Worth Dying For

A Time to Re-Assess Our American Way?

What are our American values?  Our values certainly have stood the test of time, yet aren't our values really being corrupted these days?  Citizens are not surviving and our institutions are not helping matters.  Core necessities such as affordable medical care is being cast to the wayside with ever increasing premiums and deductibles, while prices climb for groceries and education.  Education, after all, was the impetus to a better life, and now the price of an education is going up in leaps and bounds.

We value patriotism and pledge allegiance to the US, yet our politicians seem more bogged down with agendas and dogma.  It was dissatisfying seeing Rep. Wasserman-Schultz sticking to the party line on Friday's Politically Incorrect and it is frustrating seeing the bomblets being hurled around in the primary, including those buzz words such as 'socialism' and 'failed presidency.'

American values need to be re-evaluated every so often as Jefferson opined about the Constitution.  It seems pretty clear that values such as open immigration and educational opportunities have been affected by the economy of the last 5 years. The question is whether our American values are unbending or are in need of modification?  The problem with values is that defining values is in the eye and mind of the beholder.  The commentary is whether a country with a blind eye to its values has any validity as a classic democracy or republic.  The US has been a bastion and example that most other countries cannot touch, but is it time to rework our values in a time of uncertainty combined with a massive distrust of government?  The answer seems to be yes, as we find it more difficult to draw historical comparisons because our society has changed and, we as Americans should demand, as our right, a realignment of what we value and what is patriotism.  After all, isn't it our moral imperative to work together to make our country great?  Mitt? Barack? Knute? Harry? Rick? Nancy?
