RINO Hunting in Florida and the Death of the Moderate GOP

Newt and Mitt and the surgical destruction of the GOP

It was 1967 and George Romney, Governor of Michigan seemed to be a 'shoe in' for the 1968 nomination against LBJ. Then Romney came back from Nam and claimed he was 'brainwashed.'  In jumped Richard Nixon and out jumped Nelson Rockefeller, and the rest is history.  These events were the beginning of the end of the moderate and liberal wings of the Republican party, the party of Theodore Roosevelt, Nelson Rockefeller, and others such as Edward Brooke and Jacob Javitz.  The 1980's ushered in the move to the right with Ronald Reagan and then the Conservatives took over the GOP, the party of Lincoln and Teddy R.

Now it is 2012, and another Romney is under attack from the right wing of the party, but the attack seems to be contradictory in that it attacks Romney for being a capitalist and a destroyer of jobs.  Geez, those who want free market capitalism are attacking an alleged 'free market capitalist,' such as Mitt Romney and they demand transparency such as tax returns, which should be disclosed this week.  The attacker is no moral icon himself.  You see Newt eschews the media for attacking his personal life in which his ex-wife, the one he served with divorce papers while she was undergoing cancer treatments, claimed Newt wanted an open marriage, but doesn't character count?  Wasn't it Newt that helped spend $20 million trying to impeach Bill Clinton for lying about his sexual adventures with "that woman?"  Didn't Newt attack President Clinton on character and moral issues?

Then again, how much does Newt get in pension money and free medical care being a long time congressman and Speaker of the House?  Aren't funding pensions the bane of all governmental entities here and across the globe? Then there's the matter of his consulting fees paid by U.S. agencies.  It just seems this is a case where the GOP has lost its way.  It does not understand that the people are looking for someone who will get the economy going which means getting the housing market going despite the recalcitrance of the banks.  If people buy or keep their homes they tend to spend money on improvements and big ticket items which, now can be bought for little or no interest.  This is how we create jobs and get the ball rolling again.  Lower taxes would be nice but you have to stop wasteful spending.  But, before these issues raise their head, we have the death match between the factions represented by Newt and the factions represented by Romney.

Will the GOP go with a man whose disapproval rating is around 60 per cent or will they go with a man who is a RINO?

The American People seemingly do not want a President from the Right or Left, but one who is going to fight for the majority in the middle of our society, someone who will confront the banks, and someone who will think outside the box, someone with good morals.  So as the political climate heats up in Florida, what is the GOP to do?  More, as the returns come in and the 'carpet bombing" attacks go forth.
