Keeping Abreast of the Weather and Deciding Whether to Hire a Man at L.A. Newstations

Whethering Woman Weathercasters

It is often said that the law cuts both ways and today's wrongful hiring case against two local news stations shows that men can be discriminated against because they don't have the appeal of attractive females who seem to adorn the nightly weather broadcasts.  Of course this lawsuit also contends that the male meteorologist was also better qualified as well.  Wrongful termination and hiring law finds that the employment decision was made in violation of a public policy such as engaging in discrimination in hiring, employment, and firing.  Here the male applicant contends that the two stations only hired the two female weather casters because of their obvious good looks to bring in male viewers.I suspect this case will settle rather than letting the lawyers and a jury into the hiring practices for on air personalities.  Hiring anyone is a chore these days with all of the employment laws that we have in the U.S. and California.  These laws were encoded to protect everyone from all sorts of discrimination and, at the time, were never drafted towards any specific jobs or professions, so it is interesting how the Plaintiff attorneys draft their lawsuits, which include a claim made with the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing, which is required by the law as well. The DFEH currently is unable to investigate each claim, so they often give parties a 'Right to Sue' letter so they can proceed.  It will be interesting to see if this male applicant prevails and surmounts the discrimination alleged.  It is pretty clear that television is a very visual business and one's looks can be the gateway for success, then again we all loved George Fishbeck and we have our local Chatsworth meteorologist as well.
