Heeding the Clarion Call of 9/11

Americans united once, 10 years ago, but how about now?

We will be inundated with coverage of the tragedies of 9-11-01 to the point that the events will seem like they occurred yesterday.  We will see numerous views of the planes hitting the WTC towers and we will experience every moment of those buildings' collapse.  The images are ingrained in our heads, but so are the celebratory acts of those who would destroy us, either by acts of violence or more subtle ways of destruction, by use of the internet or the world markets.

Were the events of 9-11 a wake up call?  Yes, but the events also showed that we, as Americans, could come together and defeat an enemy, even one who lived in the caves and shadows of Afghanistan and elsewhere in the world.  What does this history tell us?  History can be instructive and illustrative.  We now live in a world connected by i-Clouds, where events happen and they are transmitted as they occur.  This hyper speed-up of information has made us a very reactionary society with Tweets abounding from the important to the sublime.  We have grown up as a nation, sometimes straining to maintain our values in tough times.

We now have a nation besieged by economic woes causing a rift and propagated by party first and country second.  Perhaps it is time to recall the solidarity of our country post-911 and work together to get the economy on its feet and to again be a land of promise and not a wasteland of greed.  I guess the lessons of 911 are many and there is not enough space to discuss the ramification's of 9-11 which was followed by the "Katrina Effect."  The one great thread coming from the ashes of the towers is that we can act as Americans unified in spirit and focused with determination to defeat our enemies.  So it is logical that we can apply this spirit and determination to raise our economy as well from the depths of 2008 and onto the heights of 2011.
