The Tour de France is ending tomorrow, displaying the courage and endurance these riders possess as they cross thousands of miles of terrains on bicycles. These riders are truly some of the world's best athletes burning over 5000 calories a day.
It is a good time for many in the West Valley to experience cycling now that we have over 20 miles of dedicated bikeways which run parallel to the Orange Line from Chatsworth to North Hollywood. Cycling is the best exercise and it can burn hundreds of calories as you tour the sites and parks of the Valley.
The experience can be made even more effective if you equip your bike with cleats and buy the shoes that fit the cleats. The cleats make "you one with the bike," and make the ride so much easier as you use a different cycling action to propel yourself along the roadway. The Orange Line also provides LED lit pathways for that cooler ride at night where you can view the sunset as you head south to Warner Center or East to Balboa Park.
I have seen so-called fitness mavens claim they have the best exercise, but really all you need is a quality bike and bike shoes to benefit not only from the exercise, but also utilizing the Orange Line bikeway. Biking is perhaps the best exercise and cost very little to start up and make biking your passion. Biking gives you great cardio and calorie burning that you can catalog with a heart rate monitor. The cleats are also recessed so you can walk to a cafe or walk your bike through the park. I encourage all of you to engage yourself in the wheel world of cycling and become a cycle-path.
Perhaps we can convince the local councilmembers to use the Orange Line as part of a charity bike race or a run using the busway itself to accomodate more people. Just think a Tour Rue De Valle.
