Anti-Jewish Sentiment Is Bubbling Below the Surface

Symbols of Death and Hate cannot exist in America in 2012.

It is ironic that we hear of Mr. Carreon's "Heil Hitler," in the chambers of City Hall today, within days of the defacing of two Jewish homes in the North Valley.  Allying yourself with Nazi's, Charles Manson, Buford Furrow, and others would seem to be idiotic, yet hatred for Jews, just because they are Jews keeps occurring.  It was just a few weeks ago when we saw Jewish children being murdered in France.  We have an alleged parent chauffeuring children to deface homes similar to the way Jewish businesses were attacked and labeled in Germany, except the scrawling was in Maple Syrup and not Yellow Paint. It astounds me that the police are dancing around the definition of a hate crime just this week.

Our society should give no quarter to those who wish to resurrect the Swastika and the emblazoning of the word, "Jew," as adults.  I did not see one comment from the local non-Jewish community abhorring this conduct and that would have been important for harmony in the North Valley.  As many of you do not know, many deeds for properties in Northridge contained covenants against Jews and Negroes. These covenants went by the wayside in 1962 and 1964, but the hatred of Jews remains.  We certainly cannot allow this evil signage to exist, nor can we tolerate Nazi salutes wherever.  It is sad that people do not season their First Amendment rights with an eye towards dropping Nazi salutes and symbols.  It is too easy to draw a Swastika or apply a Nazi moustache to a public official as some did with President Obama last year.  Perhaps it is time for the community to rail against such conduct once and for all. How can we be the society that defeated Nazi Germany with any tolerance for symbols used by our enemies?  We, as Americans, are a tolerant people, historically so as observed by DeToqueville, however, we cannot be tolerant of those who use these signs of evil in such a cavalier way, otherwise this Nazi sentiment will remain below the surface of our society, just waiting to seep above ground in the future.
