SFV Memorial Day Observance at Pioneer Cemetery

The San Fernando Valley Historical Society will host a free Memorial Day Observance from 11:00 a.m. to Noon on Monday, May 26, 2014 at the historic San Fernando Pioneer Memorial Cemetery in Sylmar.

The hometown, heart-felt tribute to our nation’s heroes will begin with a Color Guard detail led by Marine Corps League-SFV Detachment #1277. Special guest speaker will be Art Guzman of Sylmar, a Vietnam veteran whose 6 brothers also served their country. After a sing-a-long recognizing all military branches, the event will culminate with the All Veteran’s Burial Squad performing a rifle salute and “Taps” to honor those who've perished in the name of freedom.

Visitors will have the opportunity to view historical displays and engraved bricks placed in the cemetery’s memorial brick entrance to honor the buried, including five Civil War veterans and prominent local citizens. They will also be able to sponsor an engraved memorial brick to help support the 140-year old all-volunteer, all donation-driven historical site.

The old cemetery is located at 14451 Bledsoe St., Sylmar, at the corner of Foothill Boulevard and Bledsoe Street. Limited parking will be available at the rear of the cemetery, so please carpool, if possible, and come early for the best seating.

For additional information, please call Jacky Walker at 818-970-1286, or visit www.sfvhs.com.

Directions: From the 210 Freeway, exit Polk Street and drive a short distance south to Foothill. Turn right onto Foothill and go a half mile to the stoplight at Bledsoe.
