LOCAL STUDENT'S HEALTHY BREAKFAST RECIPE TO BE FEATURED IN LAUSD'S 2013-2014 MENU

Local LAUSD 9th Grader Guadalupe Gonzales will be eating breakfast more often at the school cafeteria come this fall...

The Recipe Selected Among 200 Entries from LAUSD Students

LOS ANGELES — Panorama High School 9th Grader Guadalupe Gonzales will be eating breakfast more often at the school cafeteria come this fall.  That’s because her healthy recipe for Breakfast Fruit Puff, which is a whole grain puff that is filled with seasonal fruit, won Los Angeles Unified School District’s (LAUSD) Breakfast Recipe Contest in celebration of National Breakfast Week this past March.  Along with winning $500, Gonzales’ recipe will inspire a breakfast menu item at all LAUSD cafeterias for the 2013-2014 school year. The contest was sponsored by the District’s “I’M IN” campaign, an all-inclusive program designed to raise awareness about the District's healthy meals to help fight childhood obesity and to encourage student attendance.

“LAUSD congratulates Guadalupe and all the students who submitted recipes to their favorite healthy breakfast item,” said LAUSD Director of Food Services David Binkle. “But this was more than just a contest.  It also served as a communication tool with students to find out what they would like to eat at their school cafeteria that’s healthy and good for them.”

In the 2012-2013 school year, LAUSD has increased its breakfast consumption in school by launching “Breakfast in the Classroom” in its primary schools, which will expand in the secondary schools during the 2013-2014 school year.  Research shows that students who eat a nutritious breakfast earn higher test scores, have lower rates of tardiness and absenteeism and tend to make healthier food choices throughout the day.  The second largest school district in the country, LAUSD serves more than 650,000 meals daily that meet rigorous USDA school nutrition guidelines.  LAUSD has offered generous portions of fresh vegetables, fruits, dairy products and whole grains that are sourced locally, the majority within 200 miles of the District.  It has also reduced salt, added sugars, fats, and oils, as well as eliminated artificial additives in all its school meals.
