UPDATE: San Diego Freeway Closures Delayed

A planned overnight closure of the southbound San Diego (405) Freeway Monday night was postponed, and Metro officials said a decision had not yet been reached on when it would be rescheduled.

However, motorists will have to cope with some lane and ramp closures near the Golden State (5) and Antelope Valley (14) freeways Monday night and each night through Friday as construction continues on a $161 million carpool lane project.

The southbound San Diego Freeway was scheduled to be closed overnight Monday and Tuesday night between the Ventura (101) Freeway and Getty Center Drive, with the roadway expected to be reopened by 5 a.m. The northbound freeway was scheduled to close on Wednesday and Thursday nights.

According to Metro's website, a new schedule for the work "will be provided at a later date."

The closures had been planned so workers could place scaffolding and supports high above the freeway as part of the effort to rebuild the expanded Mulholland bridge across the roadway.

Carpool and exit lanes are being added, and the entire freeway revamped, between the 101 and the Santa Monica (10) Freeway. The $1.2 billion project is scheduled to be completed next year, and is being run by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority in cooperation with Caltrans.

Up to two lanes of the northbound 5 Freeway will be closed between Balboa Boulevard and the 14 Freeway from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m., according to Caltrans.

And the northbound and southbound truck route collectors along the 5 Freeway near the Antelope Valley Freeway will be closed from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m.

The northbound Sierra Highway onramp to the northbound 5 Freeway will close from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. The southbound 14 Freeway truck route connector to the southbound 5 Freeway will close from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.

The transition road from the westbound Foothill (210) Freeway to the northbound Golden State Freeway will be closed from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.

The closures are part of a carpool project that will allow for freeway-to-freeway transfers without exiting the carpool lane. Work began in 2008 and is scheduled to be completed by 2013.
