High Winds Buffet the Southland

Santa Anas expected to continue through Friday.

High winds gusting at strengths of more than 60 miles per hour blew across the Southland Thursday at the start of a Santa Ana event expected to abate only on Friday.

A high wind warning, denoting the expectation 40-mile-per-hour winds gusting at 58 mph or more, will be in force until 2 p.m. Friday in the Santa Clarita Valley and the mountains of L.A. County, including both the San Gabriel and the Santa Monica ranges. Along the Orange County Coast, the warning will expire an hour earlier.

A less severe wind advisory, heralding winds of 35 mph, will be in effect until 2 p.m. Friday in the San Fernando and San Gabriel valleys and the Los Angeles County coastal zone, which includes the coast, metropolitan Los Angeles and the Hollywood Hills.

The strongest gusts in Los Angeles County Thursday morning were 64 mph at the mountain locale of Warm Springs, 57 mph at Newhall Pass and 52 mph in Chilao, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).

The high winds could knock down trees and power lines and toss unsecured objects, NWS forecasters said, adding that the drivers of high-profile vehicles should be especially careful.

The strongest winds, they said, are likely to be in the San Gabriel Valley, at the foothills of the San Gabriels and just below.
