Go Green and Win an Eco-Friendly Vacation

Galapagos Islands or Costa Rica, anyone?

If you live on the right street and make a point to recycle everything you can, you could be rewarded with an environmentally friendly adventure in Costa Rica or a cruise through the Galapagos Islands.

And the winner gets to choose the prize.

The Department of Sanitation has joined with Recyclebank to launch a contest for 15,000 single-family homes that rewards living green.

“People earn points for doing everyday green actions,” said Outreach Specialist Diana Balistreri of Recyclebank, which encourages people to earn environmental points that are redeemable for goods and services.

Chatsworth-area residents, and other contestants, have until only the end of the month to rack up points. The easiest way is by referring additional contestants to Recyclebank.

"That's the way to earn the most amount of points the fastest," Balistreri says. “Let your relatives -- your friends -- know.”

Interested? You can register here. "It will all be done online," says Balistreri.

And don't forget to choose a preferred vacation, which can be done here.

Contestants can also earn other goodies. Recyclebank’s website offers sustainable appliances and accessories to bolster green efforts.

And a slew of other rewards including gift cards to local businesses like Best Buy, Walmart and Panera Bread are available.

Points can also be accumulated through quizzes on green living, as well as simply throwing recyclables in the blue trashcan.

But only those in a pilot area can earn trash-recycling points. Click here to see if your address falls in these parameters.

How does this process work? Blue recycling bins in a pilot area are stickered. The sticker is scanned during trash-pickup to confirm that the recycling was collected. The trash truck is eventually weighed at a recycling center. The average weight of how much each house recycled is recorded for each address.

“This is just one of the ways [Recyclebank’s approach] continues to uphold the value of being community-oriented,” Balistreri says.

According to Recyclebank’s rules, all travel must be completed by June 30, 2012.

If you are in the pilot area and unable to find a sticker on your blue trashcan, call 888-727-2978 for assistance.
