Councilmember Englander and Mayor Garcetti announce Reseda Boulevard as a "Great Street"...

This Tuesday, I was proud to join Mayor Eric Garcetti for the announcement of the 15 Great Streets throughout the City of Los Angeles beginning with our own Reseda Boulevard between Plummer Street and Parthenia Avenue. What makes a Great Street? It’s more than just the physical infrastructure, street, bike lanes and tree lined sidewalks. A strong and vibrant community cannot be accomplished without its people.

Five years ago my office and this community embarked on a visioning process in partnership with Northridge East, Northridge West, Northridge South Neighborhood Councils, California State University, Northridge, the North Valley Regional Chamber of Commerce, the American Institute of Architects and the Mulholland Institute. We surveyed our local community about the Northridge they wanted our community to be and look like today and 5, 10, 20 years from now. The Northridge Visioning Process was created as a document, a vision, that we could hand to developers to tell them, this is the look we want for our community.

When Mayor Garcetti was elected and began his Great Streets Plan, my office was part of the Mayor’s Task Force to pick the 15 “Great Streets” of the City of Los Angeles. We are excited Reseda Blvd. has been chosen as one of the Great Streets of the City of Los Angeles. But this choice is no surprise, with its proximity to a major university, the Valley Performing Arts Center, the Devonshire PALS Center, the Northridge Library and various community amenities.

Reseda Boulevard truly is a ‘great street’ and a hub of community activity. It is a backbone of Mid-Century Modern architecture, well supported by mass transit, has wide sidewalks to support mobility and sidewalk dinning, bike lanes, and a myriad of mom and pop stores, many who have been here for over 30 years. Our great street of Reseda Boulevard would not be possible without the Northridge Vision Committee, an all volunteers driven board, donating their time, expertise and network to engage the community and gather community consensus to proactively shape the development of Northridge.

This was a celebration for the Northridge community to commemorate the completion of the Northridge Vision Report while highlighting all the exciting community partnership projects going on in Northridge. This event really was the culminating event for Northridge Vision and the kick off for all the great things to come. For the first time in a long time, we've seen the businesses on Reseda blvd engaged, coming out and looking forward to working with the community.

We'd like to thank the following individuals and organizations for working with us to show the rest of the City what a strong and vibrant community Northridge is: Northridge East NC, Northridge West NC, Northridge South NC
Northridge Sparkle & Andrea Alvarado & Don Larson, North Valley Regional Chamber of Commerce, CSUN, Lum Ka Naad, the Public Art Initiative & Valley Art Alliance, the Museum of the San Fernando Valley, Delicious Bakery, the Northridge Library, Irene & Cassidy Boyd, Ciclavia, the Los Angeles Neighborhood Initiative, Monrovia, the Bureau of Street Service, Bureau of Street Lighting, Department of Transportation, and the Los Angeles Police Department.
