West Hills 25th Anniversary Picnic & Elections

West Hills’ 25th Anniversary Picnic brings music,
games, ‘Wizard of Oz’ and Neighborhood Council
elections to Shadow Ranch Park on Sept. 29

West Hills’ 25th Anniversary Picnic on Sept. 29 at Shadow Ranch Park will integrate elections for the West Hills Neighborhood Council with a community celebration that includes a resource fair, free musical entertainment, picnic games, a petting zoo, inflatable play structures for children, health screenings, face painting, a balloon artist and gourmet food trucks, followed by a free outdoor screening of MGM’s classic musical The Wizard of Oz.

The free celebration will take place 1-6:30 p.m. at Shadow Ranch Park, 22633 Vanowen St. (between Fallbrook and Sale Avenues) in West Hills. The 7 p.m. screening of The Wizard of Oz will be presented in front of the historic house on the park grounds where Florence Ryerson lived when she wrote key portions of the beloved movie’s screenplay. Food trucks on Vanowen Street will serve gourmet meals and snacks available for purchase.

Elections for the West Hills Neighborhood Council, in which 22 candidates are vying for 13 seats on the WHNC’s Board of Directors, will take place in the parlor of the Shadow Ranch house from 2 to 8 p.m. The hours have been extended to accommodate the religious needs of some voters. West Hills stakeholders will be able to meet the candidates at a Candidates Corral before voting.

West Hills gained official recognition as a distinct community of Los Angeles in 1987. In 2001, the West Hills Neighborhood Council became the first certified Neighborhood Council in the San Fernando Valley.

Event chair Ed Young noted the event corresponds with “Carmageddon II,” the two-day shutdown of traffic through the Sepulveda Pass. “What better day can there be to have fun locally and celebrate your community’s birthday?” he asked.

“We have lots to celebrate,” Young said. “So let’s have fun on Sept. 29 at Shadow Ranch Park!”

Event sponsors include the West Hills Neighborhood Council, the Los Angeles City Department of Recreation and Parks, the office of City Councilmember Mitchell Englander, the Cinema Heritage Project/FACE, Los Angeles County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky, West Hills Hospital, New Community Jewish High School, Boeing, Fairwinds-West Hills Retirement Community and the West Hills Optimist Club.
