California State University, Northridge, President Dianne F. Harrison gave a keynote speech last week encouraging the school's faculty to engage students with the community and service learning to increase learning, retention rates and the likelihood of graduation, according to a CSUN news release.

In Harrison's keynote, she said she was "pleased when she found out that this year’s retreat was focused on community engagement because it aligns with her first and highest priority as CSUN’s president, an 'unrelenting focus on student success,'" states the news release.

"She challenged departments and colleges — faculty, department chairs and deans — to tie community engagement to research and to consider it as part of the RTP (retention, tenure and promotion) of faculty," according to the news release.

If they want more community involvement, they should bring back MET2, a wonderful children's theatre group that has been performing there for years. MET2 performed there twice a year and had schools, camps, and parks come to the performances. This allowed for an education to the arts for the children who might not have had the opportunity to ever see a play, as well as bringing young students to the CSUN campus, which has a drama program. MET2 was renting the space from CSUN, however it all boiled down to the university wanting more money and charged the theatre group more than they could afford. Instead of the university acting on community involvement and outreach, they acted upon greed.
