Habitat for Humanity Wins Support for a ReStore on De Soto Avenue

Chatsworth warehouse will sell donated building supplies, furniture, TVs and appliances.

Habitat for Humanity Thursday won the support of the Land Use Committee of the Chatsworth Neighborhood Council to open a store on De Soto Avenue. Tom Stemnock, of the local Habitat board of directors, was requesting a zoning variance to allow the sale of donated appliances, TVs, sinks, toilets and furniture at the new Habitat ReStore at 9610 De Soto Ave. Zoning currently permits sale of lumber, wallboard, paint and other building materials. Habitat often receives surplus hot tubs and big-screen television prizes for resale from TV game shows such as "The Price Is Right," he said. Habitat for Humanity builds houses for low-income working families.  They have built more than 200 homes in Southern California. Stemnock said it costs Habitat $…

Chatsworth Roof Stars on TV With Rising Sun

Program spotlights installation of a solar electric system.

A Chatsworth couple is starring in an episode of Lifetime Television's "Designing Spaces" as the sun rises this morning. More accurately, the sun-drenched roof of their house is the main character of the show, airing at 7:30 a.m. and repeating on July 6. The program follows Leslie and Mark Cohen of Macoda Lane in the gated community of Indian Falls as they install a solar electric system on their home. Mark Cohen said on the show that he saw an urgent need to get a solar system on his roof. “As electric costs go up every year, we will be saving a lot of money,” he said. Leslie Cohen added that she liked having solar because it was an opportunity to help the environment and create a better future for her children and grandchildren. During …

Gasoline Price Relief May Be Coming Soon

Maintenance has been completed at refineries in Southern California and Northern California.

The average price of a gallon of self-serve regular gasoline in Los Angeles County rose Wednesday for the seventh consecutive day, increasing nine-tenths of a cent to $4.407, but relief could be coming soon. The wholesale price of California-blend gasoline on the New York Mercantile Exchange dropped nearly 30 cents per gallon earlier this week after maintenance was completed at refineries in Southern California and Northern California, which should lead to the end of record-low inventories which had caused the increases. For the latest gasoline prices in Northridge, Chatsworth and Poter Ranch, click the Commute tab at the top of this page. The average price is 17.9 cents more than one week ago, 16.5 cents higher than one month ago and 17.7…

City Council Explores Dueling Medical Marijuana Plans

Councilman Paul Koretz says his plan aims to reduce the number of dispensaries to about 100.

The City Council today diverted a plan that would ban medical marijuana dispensaries but relax enforcement of rule-abiding pot shops and allow some to stay open. The council voted in closed session to send a motion by Councilman Paul Koretz back to two council committees, though it had already been fast-tracked through the committee process. Instead, the council agreed to give precedence to a plan by City Councilman Jose Huizar to ban dispensaries but allow for cultivation and direct distribution of cannabis by licensed caregivers or patients, dubbed a "gentle ban" by the City Attorney's Office. The City Council agreed several weeks ago during a closed-door discussion to advance the "gentle ban" supported by Huizar, who called Koretz's …

Rail line faces whopping 78 percent increase in the cost of diesel fuel.

Metrolink needs cash to pay for a whopping 78 percent increase in the cost of diesel fuel, so fares may be going up. Riders may face a 5-to-9 percent ticket price increase across the 512-mile system through Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino and Ventura counties. Metrolink has a $13 million revenue gap, caused mostly by a $4.7 million jump in fuel costs over the last two years. It also needs to cover $3.2 million in higher labor costs and $2.5 million in retiree health care costs "which weren't previously budgeted for." "We are linked to fuel, unfortunately," Metrolink CEO John Fenton told the San Gabriel Valley Tribune. "A fare increase is something I hate." There will be a fare hike hearing at 10 a.m. May 24, at Metrolink …
