Parent Skill Number 1: Don't send your kids to poor performing schools (because poor performingRead More peers/students) like what are in most of the LAUSD.
Ziegler April 20, 2014 at 04:23 pm
The layout of the grammer school makes a difference in what the child is exposed to and learns.Read More That sounds inconceivable but whan they made the decision to put the children is separate bungalows with just one teacher all day it meant that they would not be exposed to specialist teachers such as literature, art, and music appreciation until they get to Jr. High School. I grew up during the great depression. Most assuredly there was no excess money for education, yet we had a gym teacher, we received instructions in drawing and painting, and we listened to classical records in our one day a week music class - because we walked to the specialist teachers classroom. Getting instruction in the humanities costs no more than sitting all day with the same teacher. It is the number of classroom hours spent per week that counts. The Superintendant does not have to hire more teachers, he hires specialists who excite and stimulate the kids in the subject that they themselves love so much. When the child gets a singlr teacheer who teaches math, English, history, etc. that teacher is bound to not be too good at some of the myriad subjects. If we could expose kids tothe very best at the hight of the depression we can do better by them than to have them sit on their behinds all day with someone who is a master of some and a bore at all.

Ziegler April 20, 2014 at 04:06 AM "Karl has not blamed teachers and in fact he laments thatRead More Parents are ignored especially the Parents who want the besat for their kids. Over all the teachers are very much respected." ________________________________________________________ I think that the current tenure system is an insult to great teachers. The first special education classroom that I witnessed for my daughters did little more than babysit them. We were told that they were doing all they could for them and that they were meeting all of the goals of their IEP. Their next teacher was still taking classes towards her masters degree and was excited to try new things. My daughters made amazing progress. ____________________________________________________ When the LAUSD was forced to lay off teachers, do you want to guess which one lost her Special Education assignment? Instead she was assigned to a kindergarten classroom. What a waste of a special talent!

John Webb, my comment was not intended to be a "gotcha", it was a simple question.
ChristieD April 22, 2014 at 10:17 pm
@ Max comment: you see being gay as a "problem." This is YOUR problem. My son being gayRead More is as awesome as my other sons being straight. The problem is not gay people, it is the ignorance of those who do not understand it and thus demonize it in their own hearts. This mentality is quickly going the route of interracial marriage. Because, you know, "Christians" fought against that as well because, well you know, the Bible tells us so.
ChristieD April 22, 2014 at 10:24 pm
@ John Webb: do you really truly embrace ALL that the Bible says? There are lots of things in theRead More bible that were seen as immoral in Biblical times that are not an issue today (eating bacon, playing football - aka touching the skin of a pig, wearing polyester, etc.). There are also things in the Bible that were seen as moral in Biblical times that are considered immoral today (including slavery, stoning people, polygamy, incest, misogyny, etc.) So, which parts exactly are those that are acceptable for us to ignore while pulling out those that fit your own personal biases? Because we could go on a Bible quoting frenzy here on this blog which would be quite pointless. The issue here is that this preacher picks and chooses which issues are "special" to him and preaches against them while ignoring other issues (Jesus never said anything about gay marriage but plenty about divorce). God doesn't have an issue with gay people; heck, he created them! And I am so glad he did!

Jeffe", the reason I pointed out that we are leading in most categories is simple. We actuallyRead More put our dirty laundry right out in the open. No other country is willing or in some cases allowed to do that. In some places, they aren't even allowed to think about doing that. I do agree with most of your laundry list, but compared to any other place, it ain't all bad. That my friend is using our brains. Which also means at times using our brawn to protect us from those who use their brain for less good.

Carl is completely correct. The Greater Echo Park Elysian Neighborhood Council unanimously passed aRead More resolution in March to support "Repairs, Not iPads" in our public schools. "Should anyone also be allowed to lead it?" Good one! That would depend upon the group'sRead More members. If the group's charter is advocacy, and the NAACP is a private organization, then its bylaws will dictate who can be a leader. If it wants to be taken seriously, then it'll pick the best candidate to lead, and its influence and advocacy will be potent if it is not a sham. It'd be rather impossible, for example, a Muslim to head the Vatican, than it'd be for a white to lead the NAACP. I'd think that fundamental commitment to the cause would prohibit the former, but not the latter. Your larger point makes one think. Would the Klan accept a black Jew, for example, as its Imperial Wizard? The more insular the group, the less sense it makes to have an 'outsider' no matter how committed the person may be to the cause.

Just for you Christie nicolle: The date of Easter is not fixed, but instead is governed by theRead More phases of the moon – how pagan is that? All the fun things about Easter are pagan. Bunnies are a leftover from the pagan festival of Eostre, a great northern goddess whose symbol was a rabbit or hare. Exchange of eggs is an ancient custom, celebrated by many cultures. Hot cross buns are very ancient too. In the Old Testament we see the Israelites baking sweet buns for an idol, and religious leaders trying to put a stop to it. The early church clergy also tried to put a stop to sacred cakes being baked at Easter. In the end, in the face of defiant cake-baking pagan women, they gave up and blessed the cake instead. Easter is essentially a pagan festival which is celebrated with cards, gifts and novelty Easter products, because it's fun and the ancient symbolism still works. The main symbol of the goddess Eostra was a rabbit because of its awesome fertility. Eggs, another ancient symbol of fertility, were dyed to symbolize the colors of spring. So it's really Pagan sex day.

Crystal Smith February 22, 2014 at 01:40 pm
For those without kids in LAUSD, let me help you understand a very tragic turn of events thatRead More happened a few years ago. About 3 or 4 years ago, the budgets were slashed and the parents were told that the budgets were determined based on the % of children that lived at or below poverty levels in schools. Many schools asked parents to take the lunch form and claim their income was far less than it was (so they would qualify). The schools even illuminated that the people checking the forms are in understaffed departments, and the form itself doesn't say "under penalty of perjury", etc. It just asked for you to state your income. Many people lied on these forms, for the obvious benefit that our schools would be granted more money. I did not lie. In fact, at our school the poverty level is so low, the school didn't encourage that we lie. I found out many, many parents lied. So, flash forward and see that LAUSD claims that "553,000 families qualify for free lunches, but only 29% participates" http://cafe-la.lausd.net/sites/default/files/About%20Breakfast%20in%20the%20Classroom%20-%20Eng.pdf So, they are using faulty numbers (why would they ever care to audit these?) to create their platform that they are helping "hungry kids" that couldn't get to school before the bell and eat in the proper cafeteria environment. I've even heard the argument that these kids won't have the "stigma" of handing the breakfast "free breakfast" coupons. Hello? This went digital a few years ago! There aren't any coupons to hand over to the lunch lady... no stigma. The entire premise that we even needed this program is wrong. Next, you have the poor quality of the food. Coffee Cake is their most in demand food, however it's nutrition facts are abhorant: 440cal / 39% Fat / 510mg sodium / 34g sugar Burrito: 291 cal/ 26% Fat / 478g sodium / .7g sugar (at least it's low in sugar?) Quesadilla: 142 cal / 35% fat / 229g sodium/ .23g sugar (again, low in sugar!) Parents weren't asked if we wanted this program, it was forced on us. We weren't given a letter to Opt Out (but we were told we would back in September: (http://www.galatzangazette.com/home1/2013/9/12/breakfast-in-the-classroom-can-my-school-opt-out.html) So, now kids are double feeding (it is encouraged so the food isn't wasted), and the schools earn .20 for each meal past 70% participation. Wait? What?!? Why not just .20 per meal? Ok, that's what we call a "Key Performance Indicator", so schools can prove they have fed 70% of the population (remember how many "weren't taking a breakfast?" BINGO). So, who pays for this.. you, and you, oh, and YOU... taxpayer. What? How? Because USDA is paying $1.61 per meal out of Federal Funds and LAUSD gets .20 after they've met the 70% minimum. I always follow the money when something seems wrong and that's when I found out about LAUSD not having to pay for the program, but Joe Taxpayer does! This is corruption. This is Fraud. This is not about the kids. Finally, what does this teach kids? They would grow up their whole life relying on the government for breakfast, in some cases lunch, and then they go to College for a RUDE awakening. You want more facts? Follow me at #biciswasteful on twitter. It's atrocious what they are doing to our kids, but especially under the guise of "helping the kids".
Status Quo February 22, 2014 at 07:27 pm
BINGO --->'Crystal Smith'<--- you are correct, and very perceptive before you filled out theRead More form as at this very point in time. Of course, it flies in the face of the Liberal/liberal/illiberal perspective but serves their cause to re-order society to their wants.
